Hello all.
A licensing question...
MQ is included with WMB. Is that accurate?
Just found that on all my WMB LPARs every time I add processors my software PVU upgrade invoice includes separate line items for WMB and MQ, both licensing and maintenance.
Thanks in advance! |

Only your IBM rep can answer that.

Not entirely accurate.

You commonly find that a WMQ install on a distributed box that's only used to support WMB is swept into the WMB license. That tends to be less common on z/OS where the WMQ software is more shared, especially as processors dance around the machine.
But I repeat my first point - your licensing arrangement with IBM is what your site negociated with your IBM account rep. It's not what my site negociated or any one else's site negociated. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Thank you for the prompt response.
I have posed the question to my IBM rep. His immediate response was 'yep', then I explained the situation we are seeing... being hit with both MQ and WMB on the invoices.
In this case the LPARs are on AIX... P5xx, P6xx & P7xx boxes. They are distributed dedicated WMB LPARS. Across the board we are being hit with both costs.
I was hoping to verify my understanding, which matches what you stated.
Thanks again. Much appreciated. |

You may find better performance and licensing on distributed platforms like AIX or Linux. |
Or just get a better deal out of your IBM rep. It's interesting how often buying zSeries hardware can facilitate that.... _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Could it be that IBM gets an invoice wrong?
That I have lived to see the day...

Bad habit. I hear "LPAR" and assume z/OS. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

So the limited use WMQ license allows Broker to generate MQ messages but not consume them?
Dow this mean you can't connect a WMQ Client app to the Broker QM and write messages but reading them is ok? _________________ WMQ User since 1999
