I assume that you mean Workflow Process Choreographer (WPC). The latest version 5.1 is BPEL based. Eventually MQWF will go away, and WPC will be IBM's Workflow engine of choice. I would think we are talking a minimum of 3-5 years. I am just starting to play with WPC, and am not in any position to give advice on it at this time. _________________ John McDonald

John,
I have this understanding that as of now WPC is used mainly for short lived processes...Are you of the opinion that the current infrastructure and functionality of MQ Workflow will be incorporated in WPC in the future ? _________________ -manoj |

Manoj:
MOST DEFINITELY.
If you play with WPC use the 5.1 version, slightly different than the 5.0 version.
I have been playing around with "micro" flows....these are what you are referring to as "short lived". They run in a single transaction, all automatic etc.
But you can also have "macro" flows... more traditional MQWF looking processes with Human involvement etc.
Many of the MQWF features will merge into WPC.
Like I said though... I am just starting and really can not give any advice on it at this point. _________________ John McDonald

Yes, this is what you want to use. BPEL4WS is to FDL as WPC 5.1 is to MQWF.
My personal opinion: WPC is the future of workflow, at this time MQWF is still the product of choice, but WPC will slowly come up to speed. Exactly what happened with FlowMark and MQWF. _________________ John McDonald

It's also heavily based on WSDL, WSDL describes what parameters a service accepts and returns (portTypes), and also concrete detail of how to get to that service (service & bindings).
Quick list of thing's I like compared to MQWF:
- It does correlation on designated elements of a message (i.e. you don't have to keep track of <ProcTemplID> any more
- Faults & Fault handlers
There is a lot of the rich rules in MQWF missing though, for example I believe there are no notifications. |

Jonathon:
Most important feature of WPC (in my opinion)
Compensation
This has been a gleam in the eye of the original developers for years in my opinion. I heard about it in the FlowMark days, and just have a look at the Production Workflow book and you can see that its been desired for a long time.
As to notifications:
Since MQWF notifications are really nothing more than an entry in a worklist, I don't think you will find them necessary. Using the Expiration facility of WPC you would be able to deal with notification issues. Remember, as I said earlier, I am just beginning to play with this... my thoughts on this may change in the future.

For those who want to have a look in to WPC and compare MQ Workflow with it :-
Here's link to the trial download of WSAD Integration Ed 5.0
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/awdtools/studiointegration/
John, i couldn't find WSAD 5.1 trial download from IBM site...
Is WSAD Integration Ed 5.1 available as a trial download ?

Manoj:
Not sure about 5.1 being available for trial download, but for sure don't waste too much time with 5.0. Looked to me like there were some big changes.
Agreed on the J2EE. WPC is totally J2EE based. _________________ John McDonald

There is a WSADIE 5.1 90 day trial download, definitely go with 5.1 - so much has changed.
The thing I like the most is that WSDL isolates you from each partner application, you don't need a seperate product (e.g. MB,ICS) to perform transformation. Once you start working with WSDL you only care about the logical format of the data, you don't care anymore about the transport.
Of course, this is only an issue if you have to perform a lot of transformation. If your applications are workflow enabled already it doesn't buy as much. |
