We have MQ5.3 CSD09 installed on a sun solaris 5.8 machine. When using the PTPSample01.java program to put a sample message to a queue the program hangs and after a while gives a 2059 with a completion code of 2. I doubled checked all the client connection properties and everything seems to be ok, the listener and all the other processes are running fine, not sure why the program just hangs and after a long time displays the error message? is it something to do with solaris? any suggestions are much appreciated

Does the program ever work? If not, my guess would be that you don't have the listener running for the port that you are actually listening on. You might try running the amqsputC program with the MQSERVER environment variable to see what it does.
