Hi All
Good Morning. I need little bit of mentoring please. I have 2 opportunities in hand. One as Midleware Admin (MQ, WMQI, Websphere) in a large Financial Institution and the other as a Java / J2EE developer in an Insurance company. I am in a dilemma. Taking which will help me grow in future. WHich one is a wise move.

I would take the MQ Admin position. But that's my choice. |

I guess it depends on which one you are skilled in. I would go for middleware admin :) |

I am in EAI since 4 years doing MQ Administration, WMQI Development and integration using JMS, MDB. Over all experience is 8 years.
Thanks guys for ur advise. I understand its a personal choice, but may I ask why u guys think its MQ and why not J2EE. I mean , do u guys see that working in MQ has more growth? or more marketability?? Just curious and to convince myself, I guess.
Thanks again.

Why, the glamour and adulation of course.
Have you never been to a messaging conference and seen the 'groupies'? |

My feeling is that it has recognition. U r one among the few.
The intent of my posting for mentoring is: Is it only my feeling or is it infact the case. |

For people in teh know somone who ahs very good skills in the webshoere field is normally prized by their employers as they have to know alot of other information as well. I find alot of roles for J2EE advertised with a plethora of applicants but I also get alot of calls about MQ et al roles from the same companies as the people are not out there
The size of Fish and Size of Pond is an imporant factor to consider!
Having worked as an SAP consultant for 4 yours prior to my 4 years of MQ etc I find that I still get alot of queries. I have considered going back to SAP but find the work with MQ alot more invigorating and the ability to be carrying out an installation on differnt paltforms and consideratiosn is alot more worth my while |

The developer career path normally tends towards promotion to the business analysis / project management end of things. I certainly found that moving from development to initally DB2 admin and then to WMQ admin allows you to progress in a more technical direction.
I think it would depend whether you see yourself progressing into management or not. |
