Hi,

I have two questions regarding taking backup of MQ. We are taking backup for safety incase of a disaster in production environment and I am using linear logging. I am on AIX 5.3.

We are in some confusion regarding restore of MQ series. Actually we have to backup /var/mqm and /usr/mqm from production to QA on a regular basis. Please, Can you confirm if these 2 directories are sufficient?

Let's say Production System goes out of service and we need to restore the operation in QA , can we take a backup of the QA environment and then overwrite it with the backed up copy from Production System. Basically then the Queue Managers that were in Production would then run on QA. Will that work? What configuration do we need to keep track of?
Please tell me in case i missed out some thing...

Kindly Help.

Thanks in Advance

The System Administration guide has a detailed chapter or two on backup and recovery.

There is also a redbook on backup and recovery:

However, it is from 1998.....

Thank you for the replies...I have read the MQseries backup and recovery doc. But, i still have some doubt. I guess the backup and recovery manual is for taking backup and restoring it to the same system. But my situation is different. I have two different systems(Production and QA). In case my production system doesnt work any more and if i have backup of production, Could I move the backup of production to QA and make that QA system as the production system?.

Please let me know in case you need more info...

Thanks in Advance,

Hi,

I hope I got it right what you want to do.

I would also take the /software/mqm to the other box. There is always the danger that you have different software releases.

I tried something simmilar with W2k boxes. What we did was, to take a backup of the entire system, and restoring it to another server with the same hardware configuration.

I think there is a realistic chance that what you want to do is working. But I would strongly advise to test it before you rely on it.

The other thing that you might want to consider is, to implement HACMP. You definately should read through the various posts in this forum, that were discussing the whole HA top. I am sure you can find some valuable imput there.

my 2 cents

Sebastian
