Hi Michael,
this looks like an excellent piece of software.
Before I try to get my Manager to buy it, I would like to ask you whether it is able to gather information remotely, or if I have to copy it to all my servers across Europe and run it there?
Thanks & cheers

Currently it uses a local copy of runmqsc, so you would have to copy it to all servers you want this to run on.
Also it collects ACL information using amqoamd which is not available via runmqsc. _________________ Michael

OK, but still way better then manually typing it
I was talking also to somebody else, who also thinks this is brilliant. We where wondering whether there is a possibillity to get a demoversion of it? |

I am thinking of making this work with mqsc client (aka MO72)

Sorry I have no demo version as most of the coding is in the xsl stylesheet as that is readable. Also this the piece where you can add your own customisation, if you want the layout or report to match your corporate standard.
Don't be sad though, I do offer a one per interested party sample service for anyone interested.
use saveqmgr to save your MQ definitions of a sample qmgr and save the file as sample.mqsc,
save your ACL's using amqoamd -m Qmgr -s > sample.acl
Send the sample.mqsc and sample.acl to mqdocument (at@) mqsystems (dot.) com
You'll get an MS Word Sample document back (all information will be treated with care!) _________________ Michael

Michael,
Is MQDocument able to handle MAKEDEF as well as SAVEAMGR? We have queue managers on z/OS as well as distributed. _________________ Bruce Reinhardt

Bruce,
currently it doesn't as I don't have access to MQ z/OS or iSeries.
If you are willing to send a sample set of MQ z/OS output to mqdocument (at@) mqsystems (dot.) com I will definetely have a look and let you know! _________________ Michael

Hi,
Well, here's my 2 cents - as a consultant.
The first thing I do when I go to a client site is set them up with MS03 (saveqmgr) or MAKEDEF for mainframe (unless it has already been done). I always request the client to schedule it daily at 12:30 AM. And then copied / ftp-ed to a DR box.
Now, when I create documentation I have an appendix that lists the application queues, 1 line per queue with attributes like DEFPSIST, SHARE, DEFSOPT, MAXDEPTH, MAXMSGL, etc. I color the queue names with red for remote, blue for local, green for alias, orange for cluster, black for channel, etc.. I put a legend at the bottom to make it look cute.
And at the end of the table, I say 'for more details, go to xxxx or DR box at yyyy'. This usually makes management happy.
Now it would be nice if tool / xsl / whatever could be configured to read MS03's output and generate that table.
Now here's an idea that I have been playing around with for a few years, but never finished it to a product. When I setup the ftp / copy function to the DR box, each output file has the naming standard of:
{hostname}-{QMgrName}.mqsc
And all MS03 output files are put into a single directory.
Now to the point: I have been trying to create a program that will scan all MS03 output files and create a hierarchical view of the entire MQ environment. Basically, you have all the channel names and the sender/server/requestor channels have the IP address & port number, generating an overview picture is possible.
So, do you want to take a crack at it with your current document-generating program? Managers / directors love to see overview pictures of their MQ environment.
Regards,

I have a version that can read MS03 output to generate the current documentation
(see sample, excluding the security ofcourse) using xsl,
you can change the xsl to whatever you need, that's the whole point of using xsl.
MAKEDEF output I don't have a sample, but if someone can supply me with a resonable sample I am sure I can put this into MQDocument.
What about security definitions on the mainframe or other platforms? is there an equivalent of amqoamd on other platforms?
if someone has these outputs (MAKEDEF and security as I have no mainframe at home...) send them to me at mqdocument (at@) mqsystems (dot.) com and will have a crack at it!

Currently MQDocument creates {QMgrName}.snapshot.xml files by default, when multiple queuemanagers are on the same machine you can supply multiple queuemanager names at the same time and create a single file called {hostname}.snapshot.xml
Additionaly there is a merge utility that allows you to merge several {QMgrName}.snapshot.xml files into one file say {Environment}.snapshot.xml
Amending to {hostname}-{QMgrName}.xml or {hostname}-{QMgrName}.snapshot.xml can be done using the output file parameter

That is one of the extended goals of MQDocument, but need to fund that effort by selling what I have today
In short, if there is no interest in MQDocument V1.x, V2/V3 will never get here. _________________ Michael

Roger,
My experience in MQ-based interfaces is: developers and users want to see an MQ architecture, too. IT peoples who are not living inside of the middleware universe feel it a black box

Hi all,
After I have back my sample MQ Document, and played a bit around with it, I want to share the experiences I made
I should also say that I sent the output files of the messy testing QM to Michael, because I wanted to know how his tool does with QMs that have a lot of objects and OAM permissions set on them.
Things that I want to remark:
+ Well Structured
+ All information easy to read
+ Very good visibility
This will definately be a major improvement to our DR documentation. I have already requested to get it.
cheers

Personally as a consultant who travel everywhere the first thing i no is state "what is your naming convention" and what is your set up
most places havent got either and I end up creating something from scratch and have to type / copy and paste, opeb savemqr in excel or something to get it sorted but it still is not neat and tidy
this documentation looks v good micheal good luck
any ideas on prices? as I want a copy for myself lol |

It's all in the MQDocument product brochure I have made the pricing / licensing / usage (See page 3 and 4 for the details) very flexible and as low as possible.
if you feel anything is missing or unclear, please let me know so I can add or correct. _________________ Michael
