we plan to have one more config of workflow on a unix box for a different group. Just wondering how we can secure the access to the userid 'fmc' so that we dont trample on each other's toes.

Dont really know unix that well, but as I recall, you can specify the name of the MQWF userid, it does not have to be fmc. Have a look at the step by step install instructions in the install guide for the platform you are installing on and the answer should be there.
