On one of our Solaris MQ/WMQI servers, the unix admin has insisted on putting the home directories for the mqm user and the wmqi user on another machine, using a mount point for access.
After some recent work on the other machine, our MQ server could not mount the home directories so profiles did not load. When we did a sudo to mqm, it was an annoyance because our custom path settings were gone. But when we did a sudo to wmqi, there were just too many settings missing; we couldn't do a thing with the brokers or other WMQI utilities.
The unix admin has refused to move the home directories to be local. My question for any unix admins on our board is: Is there a "best business practice" for the location of home directories for service IDs such as these?

I'm not sure if they are best practice or not really but the default home directory for the mqm user is
AIX - /home/mqm
Solaris - /export/home/mqm
Do you have sudo access to root? If so you should be able to mount the home filesystem if it is available.
Did you ask your Unix Admin to mount the remote home filesystem?
If this continues to happen it is your Unix Admins problem, ergo his/her responsibility to make it workable for you.
If they don't want to cooperate. Open a problem ticket everytime you attempt to log on an don't have access to your home directories.
Eventually they will either make the mount point more reliable or move the mqm and wmqi home directories to the local machines.

Not sure about the /home directory, but in their installation instructions, IBM does provide for the /opt directory to be installed on a remote device, as an option:

The unix admin tried to mount the remote filesystem, but couldn't. He finally figured out he had an error in a host table someplace (?). We do not have sudo rights to be root. <sigh> I asked for root access once and got hollered at. <sigh again>
Until he figured it out, we could not do anything with the WMQI brokers, no list, no start, no stop. It's a dev box so it wasn't a catastrophe. But it also happens to be our disaster recovery box, so in the event of a real emergency, we need to be able to manipulate our components.
You are right, this is his problem to solve. I think I will present our "business requirements" to him -- that we MUST be able to log in and load the profile of the mqm and wmqi users, not matter what the state of his NIS system.
