Hi All,
We are using MQ5.3 on AIX (Production). We use Linear Logging. Do you think we should be restarting MQ Series on a periodic basis in the production server, just to recycle the process, instead of letting it run for very long duration. Can you Please suggest your valuable comments on this.
Many Thanks... |

Short answer NO.
If you were talking about a Server running a Microsoft OS I would say maybe.
AIX is one of the most stable platforms for running an MQManager. The only time I have ever felt it neccessary to reboot an AIX Server when WMQ was concerned is after there were event/s in which the MQManager/s had ended in a less than gracefull manor creating multiple defunct processes that belong to the mqm user or numerouse shared memory resources that could not be released or removed with the ipcrm command once all the MQManagers were down.
That being said I am curious. What prompted to ask this question? _________________ Yes, I am an agent of Satan but my duties are largely ceremonial. |

Hi Smith,
Thanks alot for a very quick reply. Actually I dont have prior experience on working with production systems and we were in the startup phase of the project. So, I was thinking if its okay to shut down MQ some times. I dont know the exact reason why we dont generally stop MQ on production systems. Are there any issues with this starting and stopping of MQ in production system. Sorry if this question sounds strange to you but as I am new to this, Please do reply
Thanks Again.. |

Ok then, like I said the short answer is no.
I can't think of any reason to schedule a theropudic reboot of your AIX MQManager Server.
Under normal circumstances you should only reboot your AIX MQManager Server to facilitate OS, Firmware or Hardware Replacements, upgrades or configuration changes.
Nor should you need to stop and restart the MQManager unless some problem arrises.
As you become more familiar with WMQ you will begin to appreciate exactly how reliable it is. _________________ Yes, I am an agent of Satan but my duties are largely ceremonial. |

Well, I agree that the AIX box shouldn't be rebooted unless necessary.
But WebSphere MQ does need to be shut down in order to make a good backup. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

Sure if you need to take an off line backup.
However he is in linear logging (production system).
Taking an online backup (rcdmqimg) does not warrant an MQ shutdown and will allow to offload inactive logs. |
