Hi!
I recently got an assignment of determining the CPU capacity of MQ server which is a Sun Solaris box. On this we have a queue manager and a broker. Can anybody suggest me where to look to get some information about the strategy I need to follow and what kind of tests I need to perform to determine the capacity of this server.

Thanks in advance

-Chris

Check the performance support packs.

You really need to set up your own stress test.

Enjoy

Depends on your topology, but consider the following:

1. Running specific message flows (e.g. pers., non-pers. and then both) through your broker, generating the greatest volume of messages you expect in production. This will give you an idea how resources (CPU, disk) are used by different flows. You can use this information to assign CPUs to the flows and/or set a proper number of instaces of each flow.

2. Running a stress test on the entire system. May be complicated, but gives you the most general picture of the problem.

3. Running stress tests on specific interfaces (sometimes an application can happen to be a hot-spot).

4. In all of the above you need to use messages as similar as possible to those you'll be using in production and also have some kind of system monitoring (OpenView and whatever else you have, at least top).
