Hi,

We have developers would like a tool to browse messages on queues on unix machines.

Obviously, I don't want to give them full mqm access. I know some tools use the mqm userid underneath the covers which is something I don't want. Are you aware of any tools available that would allow us to do this that is FREE.

We have tried MC6D support pac on HPUX and Linux and is perfect for what we want. However, it only seems to work ok for the 'mqm' user. How can we setup this tool to allow other users that don't belong to the mqm group to browse messages with this tool?

Has anyone got this working?

Does anyone know what other free tools are available that doesn't exploit the mq admin user?

Thanks for your help

You can't.

We "piloted" this support some time ago for a few users, limiting their accounts to non-lethal authorities (inquire, browse, etc.). It became too much of a hassle, so we dropped support for it. We were unable to find a free substitute.

Write your own in java/JMS and tune it to your needs
Make sure you only allow for bindings connection (security hole in client connection)

Enjoy

Also, take a look at some of the free tools like MQJExplorer. Roger (from Capitalware) has a pretty good tools for developers.
There are significant improvements in MQ Explorer, which will be released with MQ V6.0

Hi,

As kirani mentioned, Capitalware has a tool called MQ Visual Browse that fits exactly what you are looking for. It is almost free.

For more information or to download a 30-day trial of MQ Visual Browse go to:
http://www.capitalware.biz/mqvb_overview.html

Give your developers logins on the UNIX machines, and set the authorities to WMQ objects using setmqaut. They can then use amqsbcg, which they can modify to their heart's content, and filter the output however they want using the available UNIX tools, sed awk vi grep etc. Are they C programmers and UNIX developers, or just playing at it?

There is ofcause the MO71 support pack.

You can configure what they are allowed to do, and maybee combined with a security exit (Like BlockIP or an auth. exit), you can let them look, but not change anything. And it's free.....

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=203&context=SW000&dc=D420&dc=D410&dc=D430&q1=mo71&uid=swg24000142&loc=en_US&cs=UTF-8&lang=en

Just my $0.02

Hi,

Thank you all for your responses, I'll take a look at all the options you've posted back to me.

It's a real shame MC6D doesn't work for other users, since it's just a browse tool.

To be honest, we need a tool not just for unix but for all platforms, so early indications would be Visual Browse (we'll have to get over the fact that it's not free ) well, individual licenses are cheap anyway.

Again cheers for all your help!

Hmm, support pack MO71 can support WebSphere on all the platforms, it's running on windows, and can use either Client or a server connection to access the queuemanager.

You can even use it on z/OS, but this requires the CAF (Client Attachment Facility feature).. I'm using it, and is very happy for it, hard to live without.

And it's very cheap, it's woth to take a look on... 0.00....

Just my $0.02

I don't think CAF is needed for Z/OS.

True. MO71 can admin a QM either directly (if it is running on the same machines that MO71 is on), via a client connect, or thru another QM that has a QMAlias and channels to and from the QM you want to admin. The problem with that last method is that you need that other QM up to admin your intended QM, which is not always possible. I prefer having MO71 making client connections to every QM I need (135+ QMs currently, including z/OS).

Peter,

Thanks for the clarification.
We use 2nd method where all the queue managers have channels to central queue manager for MO71.
