Linear logging should be used when linear logging is required. Just because its production doesn't mean you need linear logging. An MQ system with non persistent transient data gains nothing from linear logging.

Linear logging will massively increase the required disk space and the logs need managing.

Even for persistent messages it not be required, especially if you have a highly available SAN with RAID disks.

In 9 years having worked for 3 large firms including 1 year with IBM Global Services, I have never encountered a Production MQManager that used Linear Logging.

I am aware of the advantages but apparently most Enterprise Operations Groups would rather risk using Circular Logging rather than administer the Linear Logs.

I believe the real question about linear logging and message persistency is:
What is the cost to your organization of loosing a message.

If you work in a request reply model without persistency it does not make sense at all.

If on the other side you use a datagram model and cannot aford to loose a message, persistency and linear logging is the way to go...

Now handling the logs is not such a big problem. Every night we archive a few and keep the archives around for a little less than a month.

Enjoy

I understand your point. I never said Linear Logging was a bad thing.
