Hi ,
We are considering a MQ monitoring tool.Ours is a AIX,AS/400,Windows environment. We have QMs all over the place. We have SAP .
We want a tool to
1)Monitor MQSeries,MQSeries Link for R/3
2)Generate alerts when some status changes ,Say Channel down etc
3) Generate alert emails when a message goes to DEADLETTER QUEUE or BADMESSAGE QUEUE and if possiblee grab the message from queue and send as a e-mail message to concernd people.
4) And any other useful MQ statistics etc.
Please let us know your openion.
Thanks

The contact admin Contact Admin suite of products is pretty cool.
It's being used by some of the largest retailers in the world, managing and monitoring extremely large MQ networks.
It's very quick to get up and running, and very simple to accomplish the kind of alerting and automation you are looking for. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

If one has to rate a monitoring tool which comes first.Considering performance, cost ease to use etc.
Thanks

It depends.
If you're a cheapskate, then cost comes first.
If your CPU is already running at 100%, then performance might come first.
If you want to be able to do your job efficiently, then maybe ease-of-use is your criteria.
You need to decide what's important to you.

Kiran,
You need to create a Requirements Doc. That is a document that outlines what you want or need in a MQ monitoring/administration tool and also for SAP. The requirements doc should include platforms supported, SNMP (email/pager) support, MQ Admin tools (specific needs and desires), MQ Monitoring (again specific needs & desires) and SAP support, which I know nothing about. The tools that are out there typically have a DLQ handler, but you can create one yourself today just as easy.
Once you have this doc, send it to the respective sales reps and see if they can meet the requirements. Then get the one(s) that meet or come close to the requirements to demo their products and do a trial on the one(s) you like. Believe me, they really want to show you their product(s) and typically will do free trials to get their foot in the door.
I have worked with Candle, which was my favorite, but they are no longer a player, snapped up by IBM. We may see Candle Net Portal (CNP) in the future as part of Tivoli, but haven't heard anything. BMC Patrol is a nice product, can't go wrong with BMC, but it's not cheap. contact admin, I looked at this, liked it and recommended it to our management, but they cheaped out, or so they think, and purchased Tivoli BI. I also looked at QPasa and it too is a nice product for MQ and it is my understanding; it may be a lower cost option in this field. I wouldn't call it cheap because it is a respectable product. You absolutely do not want Tivoli BI. It is slow, cumbersome, and useless for administration. Rumqsc is faster from command line than using the Tivoli GUI. I really don't even like the monitoring in it, but it does work. We bought it, but I use MQMon (IBM free support pack MO71) for administration. For MQ at this time, with the exception of Tivoli, there are no bad admin/monitoring tools. It really comes down to "requirements" and cost. Many are Java based so performance is based on system horsepower. This was long winded, hope it helps. |

Kiran,
For SAP support using MQ-Link for R3 you can monitor indirectly:
a) from SAP If any messages land in tran SM58 -- Messages with a specific status. Monitor every 5 mins
b) from MQ:
Messages piling up in the SAP inbound queue and no process consuming it.
Messages on the DLQ
Messages on the Bad Message Queue.
Enjoy |

I am using the Candle MQ monitor at a large site to do the tasks you listed. I think most all the monitors will meet your basic needs. Candle is part of IBM/Tivoli and is alive and well. _________________ IBM Certified Specialist - MQSeries
