All,
I want to know if setting the max message length and Max Q Depth above their default has any immediate resource (disk, memory etc) implications?
We are running mQ5.3 in a multi-platform environment - XP, Unix, OS390. Out of the box the max message length is 4Mb and max Q depth is 5000. For the project I'm working on we will have much larger messages going down some of the Qs, plus some of the Qs that hold smaller messages will have some pretty high Q depths for some periods, particular if some of the endpoint message consumer applications are down. Hence we want to increase both max message size (we are suggesting 50MB) and max Q depths. Our MQ infrastructure people have shown some reluctance to do this.
So, if we set all Qs to a max message size of 50MB and a max depth of say 100,000, would just the setting of these configuration options have any impact on the resource usage of the Q manager (or server)? (I know if we actually have messages on the Qs this will use memory/disk etc, but I'm interested in any impact of just setting these config options.) |

The only problem with setting global defaults for the MAXDEPTH and MAXMSGL is that you'll leave yourself open to a rogue application putting a large number of large messages. If you know for a fact what certain queues should contain, then setting the values accordingly will help you keep a handle on resources. |

You also have to make sure you have enough /var/mqm/log/MQGR/active log files defined of an appropriate size to accomodate the larger messages if they are persistent. _________________ Yes, I am an agent of Satan but my duties are largely ceremonial. |
