Hello friends,
I have got 2 qms in a cluster; QM1 is running on an AS/400. QM2 is running on AIX.
So far both of them are on WMQ 5.2.
Now the guys that are running QM1 want to update to 5.3.
Does one of you see any risk in this?
Are there any recommendations on how to get this done smoothly?
Do I need a special CSD on either site to run this?
Or is this a no go??
Thx for any help you can give me.
cheers

It is a bad idea to mix 5.3 member queue managers with 5.2 full repository queue managers.
If you do this, and enable SSL on the 5.3 queue managers, you will corrupt the cluster repository.
So upgrade your full repositories FIRST, and you should be okay. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

Thanks for the fast reply. That answers my question.
The Repository is sitting on the AIX box.
I will recomend them not to do it, as we cannot update the AIX box at the moment.
THX again and cheers

Well, you're fine with a mixed cluster AS LONG AS you don't use SSL.
And you're fine with a mixed network, too. So you could take the AS/400 box out of the cluster and upgrade it. Then when you upgrade the AIX box, you could add the AS/400 back into the cluster. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

very soon you will have to think about migrating to MQ5.3. I believe support for MQ 5.2 ends soon. _________________ Kiran

Officially IBM support for 5.2 has already ended (01/01/04) for UNIX Microsoft OS's. I am not sure about AS/400. But either way if you are a preferred customer they will try to help. This will work until you get to 3rd level Support then they will tell you to install the most recent version with the most current CSD and call us if the problem continues.
BTW when you do eventually move to 5.3 save yourself some headaches and install the most current CSD's at the same time and if you have any applications that have a Client relationship with the MQManager using Java. Make sure they don't have copies of the .jar files all over the place.
Start in Dev and make them fix it. _________________ Yes, I am an agent of Satan but my duties are largely ceremonial. |

I was just wondering, why are QM1/AIX and QM2/AS/400 Clustered?
Is there a QM3 AIX MQManager in the cluster or a QM4 AS/400 MQManager?
Do QM1 and QM2 serve the same purpuse in the Cluster or do they just talk to each other? _________________ Yes, I am an agent of Satan but my duties are largely ceremonial. |

There are a couple of more queuemanagers in that cluster (some W2k, some AS/400, and some AIX). But the AIX one is the full repository, and the AS/400 one is the one, they want to update.
I don't worry so much about support. My companie is paying a lot of money to IBM to get supported whatever Softwareversion of MQ we want. The same is true for AIX where we are still running 4.3 on some boxes.
I guess even the contact admin is running newer AIX versions in their space shuttles
You can belive me that I am a true fan of new Software, but for the moment we can't go to a higher softwarelevel on the AIX boxes.
Anyway, this AS/400 gets Migrated to our 5.3 environment by the end of next year.
I finally recomended not to do it even though we are not using SSL in this particular case, It always gives me a bad feeling mixing up 2 different Software versions. And there is still a risk (don't know how big it is) that there is something happening that we are not expecting. |

Where clustering is involved, you really want to be on the latest software because of the large number of bugs that have been fixed in 5.3. |

Belive me, I would love to update all that things, but unfortunately it is not my decision! |
