The product is now eclipse based (bye, bye clunky GUI), has visio export and support for process choreographer. IBM have also announced that they intend to integrate their recent purchase of Alphablox into the product, giving business dashboard capabilities (whatever that means).

It's available for download from tommorrow.

Anyone looking for a replacement workflow design tool that produces FDLs will be in for a disappointment. Just take a look at what Modeler 5.1 does not do (taken from product documentation):

Quote:

FDL elements not generated

This section lists the elements that are not generated when you export from Business Integration Modeler to FDL files.

The following FDL elements are not generated:

. Process attributes

    Valid from
    Global container
    Process administrator
    Duration of process
Control setting (Control tab settings on process: audit trail, notification mode, etc.)
Activity setting (Activity tab settings on process)

. Program/Process activity attributes

Execution setting (Execution tab setting on program/process activity: execution server, etc.)
    Expiration
    Tools
    Notification
Control setting (Control tab settings on program/process activity)
    System (on process activity)

. Connector

    Data loop connector
    Default connector
Default data connector (generated only for an empty activity)

. Network

Anything related to network topology (such as UPES or queue manager) is not supported

. Program

Programs are not supported (an empty program is generated for any program activity that is generated)

. Visuals

    Visual information is not exported

My Opinion:

Modeler 5.1 is not an "FDL" or "BPEL" generator replacement like the old Modeler. You should view it as a Business Analysts tool only.

For MQWF I would recommend you stay with Modeler 4.2.4 and Buildtime. For WPC, you will not be able to avoid usint the WPC Modeler, so from the development side of things I would think you only use the Process Editor and leave Modeler 5.1 to the Business Analyst

This is a real shame, I expected the functionality to be a superset of 4.2.4.

If there is no demo available, then the best way is to subscribe to the software access option:

http://www.developer.ibm.com/welcome/guide/value.html

You can then get your hands on virtually all IBM software.
