I can't seem to find an answer to what are a couple of basic questions:
1) After the upgrade, will my custom-written adapters continue to work as they did before the upgrade without modification or recompilation?
2) Will the 5.2 boxes continue to operate/talk with the 5.0 boxes that I haven't upgraded yet? That is, will I have to upgrade all boxes at the same time, or can I upgrade one at a time at my leisure?
Thanks in advance,

Your adapters should continue to work as before without recompiling provided that they were compiled with the the shared libs for MQSeries
chatr YOUR_ADAPTER | more you should find in the output libmqm.sl if so
your apps are using shared libs, which means when you upgrade your apps will
load the new libmqm.sl
The only problem with the upgrade from v5.0 to v5.2 is that you should uninstall
MQSeries (just /opt/mqm) not you QMGR Data (/var/mqm) then install V5.2
As far as working with other versions of MQSeries not an issue, I went through
this upgrade and it took me at least a 1.5 months to get all of our HPUX queue
managers updated.

I cannot speak for custom adapters, but we just recently upgraded our UNIX boxes, and they are working just fine. They will still talk to not upgraded boxes as long as you are not using 5.2 specific features that are listed in Release guide.
