I'm looking to upgrade an AIX box running MQv5.2 to MQv5.3 and also apply CSD05. Is it advisable to upgrade to v5.3, start qmgrs and make sure everything is ok then bring MQ down again and apply the patch? Or shall I do it all in one go?

I'd go for the 'phased' approach, although never had much problems upgrading on a UNIX system...

I would advice to upgrade to 5.3+ latest CSD. Otherwise you have the risk to get a problem that is fixed in one of the CSD's and you have to do the work twice. For some new functions (like MQ SSL) you might need to have CSD's applied.
