We are looking for a MQ Developers tool (similar to MQExplorer) using which they can do daily MQ support activities. These activities include viewing queue definition, enable/disable queues, clear messages, put/copy test messages etc. Our developers will have limited access to the queue managers. They are not supposed to do "admin" activities on the queue managers. Our admin folks don't like using tools that use "back-door" to connect to the queue manager. I.e. the user needs "higher level" of authority in order to connect to the queue manager.
Currently, I am aware of following MQ Developer tools
1) MQJExplorer (no formal support).
2) MQ Visual Edit.
3) Reconda's QNAppWatch.
4) WMQTool
I was wondering if any of you know any other tools that can be used by MQ Developer and are simple to configure and require minimum authorizations? _________________ Kiran

There is also the MO71 Support pac, which I use every day, but its an all or nothing deal. The user can do everything from an MQ Admin perspective, or you lock them out completly. Great tool. Free. Not supported (officially). _________________ Peter Potkay

Peter,
Thanks for your input. I forgot to mention MO71 in my list. We are currently using that tool to connect to MVS queue managers only. From authorization level perspective that's the best tool I have ever seen!! But, as you mentioned IBM does not support this tool officially, so we don't want to use it in Production Environment. _________________ Kiran

Of course there are the 'elephant' tools like BMC's Mainview MQ and Patrol for MQ and the (now IBM) Candle MQ tools that you can use.
There are also some other tools from ASG or MQSoftware. I don't know the technical details of those tools but they can be used in a development environment. Disadvantage of all these tools are the costs, all of the tools are very expensive.
I recently tested the (freeware) WMQTool and that seems to offer a lot of functionality. The latest release offers a very detailed security mechanism and with the new shared profile support, maintenance of the security is easier than before. I don't have experience with the security settings yet but it looks promising.
Of course it's up to you/your organization whether you want to implement a freeware solution. For what it's worth: I have reported several bugs and enhancements, and the response from the author is good and quick. _________________ Peter Smit

What about PQEdit. It's geared specifically towards application development.
Its owned by Candle corp.....not sure of the cost. |

PQEdit is only a message editing tool, no (limited) MQ viewing/admin. It's now owned by IBM. _________________ Peter Smit
