How do I install and configure a WAS5.1-based JNDI name server on Linux?
I've done this sort of thing before using WAS4.x and MQ as the JMS provider. Once the name server was installed and configured, I could use the JMSAdmin tool to set the INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, PROVIDER_URL, define my subcontexts, qcf's/tcf's, et cetera based upon the MQ objects I've defined in the queue manager...
At the end of this process, I'd like to have a centralized JNDI namespace (this isn't LDAP, a filesystem, or some other app server) wherein I just give my users a URL (iiop://some_server:some_port/) so that their apps can to lookups...

Is this not a custom option available using the installation wizard on Linux?
Also, one of the key things in version 5 and 5.1 of WAS is that namespaces can be federated.
So you don't "need" a "central" name server to have a "unified" namespace.
You can federate all your WAS machines name spaces together, and then have your applications use federated names for the resources instead of the "actual" names.
But this isn't really an MQ discussion.

First, thanks to you both for addressing my question...
Doesn't the use of the JMSAdmin GUI to manage the namespace create on tranient objects with WAS 5.x? So that if WAS went away for some reason, the JNDI objects would go way too...
Lastly, I was only using the WAS name server to hold the JMS administrative objects for my JMS users to lookup. I am merely using WAS as a administrative tool to facilitate JMS for *many* applications. At the end of the day, the creation of new object will be a two-step process of defining them within the queue manager and defining them in the JNDI namespace. In that sense, I believe this was an MQ question...

Wait... you mean you can create Java applications that don't run in WebSphere? The shock, the amazement!

Well.. maybe I'm misunderstanding the question. It seemed like you were asking about how to install the JNDI Name Server component of WAS 5.x without installing any other piece of WAS 5.x, which is clearly not an MQ question.

| JBoss is pretty easy to customise, and you can get it to just start the JNDI server. With websphere, you get almost everything, whether you need it or not. |
