HI,
imporant question to grand masters or experienced people :
- we have to migrate from mqs 5.2 to 5.3 on a sun solaris box
- Ibm says that we must first uninstall the old version 5.2
OK but the big pb is:
1 - are the data queues file system kept after uninstallation of 5.2?
2 - can we install new version 5.3 without damages for these queues ?
3 - in case of having messages still in the queues before installing 5.3 are
these messages lost or not or modified ???
thanks very much for experiences and clear info about this pb

MQ objects in /var/mqm are NOT touched by the pkgrm that you need to do to remove MQ 5.2 software.
But make a backup of /var/mqm.
The software that it is touching is all in /opt/mqm as well as the links to it in /usr/bin.
We did on the order of 100 Unix MQ conversions last year and I don't think that we lost a message.
We didn't backout any of the upgrades either though.
I did backout a 5.1 to 5.2 upgrade the previous year and used the backup to save all the messages.
The basic steps are just (for AIX/SUN/HP-UX, not sure on the other platforms);
a) uninstall current version of fix packs.
b) uninstall current mq version.
c) install latest version of mq.
d) install latest fix-pack for latest mq version.
In between the installation of the fix packs you can do some testing first.
And as what tkane said, do a backup of your /var/mqm.
I'll add, also do a backup of your /opt/mqm (I just do this whenever I do an upgrade).
TKane, thats a lot of MQ conversions! MQ market over here isn't that good. _________________ Jed
