I need to know if MQ series can be run by a group other then mqm. The reason for this is I am running WAS5 as a user and group that is a standard. For example the user is wasuser and the group is wasgrp. Would it be possible to run MQ series as wasgrp? If so can you point me to some documentation on how to achieve this.

Thanks

Technically, the answer appears to be 'yes', however not in the manner you desire. From the Administration Guide, page 113:

Quote:
To be a WebSphere MQ administrator, you must be a member of a special group called the mqm group (or a member of the Administrators group on Windows systems). On Windows systems, members of the Administrators group can also administer any queue manager.

No. The mqm security group is it.

I am running MQ on AIX. One would think that I could change the MQ user to be in the wasgrp and also run "chgrp wasgrp" on the /usr/mqm and /var/mqm directories. Technically I should be able to do this just like I have changed WAS5 from root ownership to be owned by wasuser and in the wasgrp. Unfortunately this is my only environment so I don't have the luxury of experimenting on MQ series.

A user could be part of both wasgrp and mqm, if that helps. That way you could logon as that user and access both.

Yes, I have considered adding the mqm group as an additional user to wasgrp. The problem is that the 3rd party vendor's instructions say that WAS5 needs to have mqm as the primary group. I would prefer to change mqm's group instead of wasuser just to keep things consistent

If Aix has the concept of primary and secondary group(i am not sure of this), then you could create a user FRED and assign "mqm" as primary group and "wasgrp" as secondary group. This would suffice the requirement.

Logon as FRED to run the 3rd party app. That way you dont really mess with mqm group as such.
