I'm developing models using a Win2K (P4-2.0ghz; 512MB RAM) but the Workflow Buildtime application takes a long time (2 minutes) to open. I have multiple Word docs open but nothing else. Would adding more memory help? Also, I have a single hard drive so DB2 is sharing space with other apps (however, only 7GB of 30GB is used). |

use MS Access for Buildtime. I noticed a long back that Buildtime was very slow with DB2 and always used MS access ever since. _________________ -Ratan |

...so adding memory won't improve performance. Is the typical buildtime setup on W2K using MS Access? I've installed everything out of the box. I'm concerned about any gotchas with using MS Access as the buildtime db. Anything I should watch for configuring for Access? Thanks for the tip. |

with Access you have to refresh buildtime everytime you define a new object, otherwise wont be visible in buildtime. _________________ -Ratan |

I agree with Ratan... MS Access will solve your problem.... Memory will always help DB2 and IF this gets you an upgraded machine telly your boss everyone on MQSeries.net has 1 Gig to run this stuff
Seriously, I use Access all the time, never DB2 for BT. As Ratan points out the only issue is that when you add an item it doesnt show up right away. You only need to refresh if you actually want to see the newly added item. When you add a second item, the first will show up... etc _________________ John McDonald

I had RAM added to my Win2K machine but opening Buildtime still takes a long time. I even created the BTDB in MS Access as suggested. I store the BTDB on my local "C" drive. Any suggestions is appreciated...At one time, Buildtime used to open quick even with DB2. |

Can you give us some idea of the number of the varios types of objects you haves stored in the BTDB... What you are seeing is something I've not experienced. _________________ John McDonald

I surprised myself about the slowness. The MS Access BTDB is very small. Only 1 model with 6 activities, 2 data structures, 4 programs, and no staffing beyond admin. I hear the disk drive "whirring" in the background so my PC's disk could be due for a defrag. |

...for example, it takes a while to open the Properties or Container Mappings for any activity. I hear the same old "whirring" (quiet but noticeable) each time. Sounds like a possible hardware issue... |

I asked someone on my team (with a bit more Win2K experience). She thought WF BuildTime may be searching the network for DNS entries. She recommended trying to logon with a local user (not a domain user). I logged off as my domain user, then logged back in as a local user. I was able to open BT quickly -- and no more whirring noises. It was like going from night to day! Can someone give an explanation for this behavior? What do I tell our PC support technician to adjust my domain user profile? |

ugh!...All this time, I had the forgotten that I set the SQL Trace ON in the ODBC Administration utility (this explains the heavy I/O activity on my desktop). I just turned it off...everything for Workflow is lightening fast! |
