I want to set up MQSeries 5.3 on a pair on Windows servers.
Which version of Windows is the most suitable?
Windows 2000 or Windows XP professional? or
Windows 2000 Server, or Windows 2000 Advanced server? or
Windows 2003 Server or Windows 2003 Enterprise server?
The platform would probably be a 2-4 CPU IBM X-445 Xeon 3.0 Ghz. |

Asking which version of Windows is most suitable... well.... 
I think the rest of it is a matter of licensing fees and recommended/supported OS for the hardware. Enterprise server is going to cost more than Advanced server or 2003 Server.
And I think Microsoft would claim that XP Pro is not a "server" OS, and so should not be used for MQSeries Server. And I don't know if XP Pro supports MSCS. So if by "a pair of Windows servers", you mean a failover cluster, then you might be out of luck there.

OK ignoring the cost and assuming a MSCS cluster may be needed - which versions are supported or recommended?
I can't see mention of Windows 2003 server (which would be my preference) so I guess that just leaves Windows 2000 server - correct?
(Advanced server if we want support for more than 4 CPUs). |

My opinion is if you want to run MQ in a production type environment you would want it on W2K or 2003 server. Windows XP is designed for workstation use, not server use.
Also, if you want to use MSCS you will have to get Advanced Server. Plain server edition doesn't have the MSCS feature.

| Good point about MSCS - thanks for the info and URL. I was looking in the manuals and couldn't see Windows 2003 mentioned. Looks like Windows 2003 Enterprise Server will be the one for me. |

Unless you've got lots of time to set it up, I'd recommend you use 2000
Enterprise.
You might get lucky, but I wouldn't be surprised if you spent a considerable amount of time resolving 2003 specific issues. |

| We are setting up a new cluster (and on top of that, I am new to MQ) on 2003 Enterprise servers. The cluster config goes quite easy and messages flow back and forth freely in the cluster. Load balancing/round robin work fine. My problem is that I can get messages to the edge gateway but can't get them to a distributed queue outside the cluster. And, I can get messages on distributed queues up to the gateway (messages are on last queue before entering gateway). I am missing something to get the messages from the gateway to the outside dist. queues and visa-versa. Anybody have any suggestions on what to look for that I may have missed. Remote queues are defined. Transmission queue defined. Channels defined from gateway to distributed queue. I can ping both ways, confirmed. Just can't get the messages to "cross the bridge". Thanks. |

Have you taken a look at the Intercommunication Guide? That manual has information on setting up distributed queueing. You may be missing a simple step.
So far from your description, you did not mention you started the channel. Could be as simple as that.
The ability to ping suggest the channel is in inactive state. If it is running, then you cannot ping the channel. The first thing I would suggest is to START the sending channel.
Take a look at the AMQERR01.LOG for what error it has captured. |

Hello kman,
Thanks for the suggestions. I have taken a look at the Intercommunications Guide, Clustering Guide and a few others. (A lot of trees gave their lives printing those Redbooks.) IBM's documentation from a Windows perspective using the MQ Explorer is extremely light, at best. I will check the channels as you suggest and see if there is anything in the error logs. That note on pinging is something that I did not find in the guides and is very useful. Tips and hints like that are greatly appreciated.
I am still waiting for a couple of shipments of various MQ books (non-Redbook) I ordered from the Internet. Hopefully, those will provide more easily digested materials on MQ configuration.

Thanks for the suggestions. I thought I had been starting the channels but I guess I wasn't doing all that was needed to start them "correctly". But, it worked this morning  After a couple of weeks of banging my head against a wall, I am a happy camper. Those little things will get you every time.
