Link to IBM Redbooks platform specific:
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/integration/mqfamily/library/manualsa/manuals/platspecific.html

If your installing on distributed platforms, anything other than z/OS get the Quick Beginnings book for your OS.

For z/OS or OS/390 get the WMQ 5.3 for z/OS System Setup Guide.

Redbooks are useful but no substitute for the documentation set supplied with the products or see the "documentation" link at the top of this page.

I would recommend taking a class on Websphere MQ as the first step.

The most basic document on MQ, what it is and how it does. Start here first.

Quote:

MD02: An MQSeries Primer
This SupportPac provides an introduction to the concepts of messaging and queuing and how they are implemented in the MQSeries family of products. It gives an overview of how MQSeries works (addressing areas such as the MQI, message types and formats, channels, queues, queue managers, triggering etc) and also covers more advanced topics such as distribution lists and clustering. Coding examples are provided for basic functions such as queue manager definition and put/get of a message.

Possible Uses
This document is intended for use by anyone wishing to gain a general overview of messaging and queuing and an insight into MQSeries implementation.

Prerequisites
None. This SupportPac applies to all MQSeries platforms.

Skill Level Required
Users of this SupportPac need only have a general understanding of computer programming principles.
