We are in the process of updating our guidelines for naming integration servers (formerly known as "execution groups"), on a Linux platform. According to the IBM Knowledge Center, in addition to the conventional alphabetic and numeric characters, we can use any of the following special characters:

However, there is also this peculiar warning:

| If you expect to trace the operation of an integration server, restrict the name of the integration server to include only the valid alphabetic and numeric characters listed. The trace commands do not support the use of special characters for an integration server name. |
Can someone explain how we might run into problems with this? Is it just a matter of needing to quote names containing characters special to the shell, or is there more to it than that? This warning dates back to at least wmb8, so it' s not new. We have used underscores in our integration server names since before then, and have never had any issues running user traces, service traces, or even using Trace nodes. (What other types of traces are there?)
Our updated guidelines only use the underscore and dot as special characters in integration server names. I have already deployed one to an integration node ("broker") in iib10, and had no trouble running the various usertrace commands against it. Is there something else I should test for?

hi...I've seen both '.' and '_' used in EG/Integration server names without any issues in collecting traces.

JSEE traces are collected as EG level I believe, http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21300238
Some other traces are odbc and RFC/JCO but not directly linked to integration servers as such.
May be worth raising a query with IBM and see. |

We also only use '.' and '_' in EG/IS names, APP names and MF names on AIX and Linux platforms.
Rather than venture into uncertain territory, it is probably safer to stick with a very limited set of characters that are known not to cause any issues and don't require quoting in any circumstances. It will make life much easier.

That was supposed to be a rhetorical question. 
I was more interested in an explanation for the warning.
