Hello,
I've been looking for recommendations on mq cluster topology and came across this doc. It talks about having separate sender gateway and receiver gateway qmgrs in the cluster.

With dedicated qmgrs for each application, Could there be significant performance degradation(or any other issues ) if a qmgr in a cluster is used as both sender and receiver gateway?

Define "significant".

If you have 5,000,000 messages an hour going both into and out of the cluster, possibly.

If you have 5,000,000 messages an hour going both into and out of the cluster and each message is part of a batch process with a 24 hour SLA, possibly not.

If you have 5,000,000 messages an hour going both into and out of the cluster but your gateway is running on z/OS, possibly not.

If you have 5,000 messages an hour and they're 25Mb each, possibly.

If you have 5,000 messages an hour and they're 25Kb each, less so.

In an ideal world (or IBM's view of it) you'd build the topology described in that document and pay for the PVUs with a dump truck filled with $50 bills. In the real world, less so.

IMHO I'd sooner have 2 gateways that did both sending and receiving but eliminated the single point of failure than dedicated senders and receivers. But if I had the budget I'd have both.

This is the total no. of msgs in and out of the MQ cluster network and not per application right?

yeah, we have a requirement to move to client bindings with HA qmrs from local bindings.
The topology described in that doc would increase our no. of qmgrs by 2 fold

I focused entirely on the performance of the gateway queue managers. as that seemed to be the focus of your question.

How much capacity you have inside the cluster for applications is a separate question.

There could. It depends on many factors. You should map out a design scenario based on your requirements and do POC and volume testing.

To take advantage of automatic message load balancing in MQ clusters there needs to be at least one sending qmgr and at least two receiving qmgrs. The sending and receiving qmgrs should be different.

To improve availability there could be multiple sending qmgrs that the app can connect to via MQ client.

This is all covered in the linked article. You should study this in detail until you understand everything. Don't rely on us to feed you random bits of information!
