moved to clustering forum... on a slow connection... so got some trouble trying to move it the first time...
How is life "down under" treating you? I hear Waltzing Mathilda is just a stone throw away? _________________ MQ & Broker admin |

Thanks for the move.
Life down under is treating us well. Oz is over 2000km away, so a pretty long throw, but it is still the nearest country.

Wish I was going. But I am in Peter's Potkay's backyard these days and we met last week. _________________ MQ & Broker admin |

Hope you are enjoying NZ. I had my honeymoon there.
There's a strong rivalry between NZ and Oz. (friendly)
Just ask any NZer ! Keep clear of the sheep.
Don't mention Rugby or Cricket. _________________ Glenn |

I actually haven't had whitebait here in NZ - not deliberately, just not seen it on a menu. Had whitebait in UK in the past though. Didn't realise it was a NZ thing tbh.

I've been firmly on the hate side of the marmite debate so there's no point in me trying to decide which of those two disgusting tasting spreads are better!

Sorry to hear we won't be seeing you there.

The NZ vs Oz rivalry is rather similar to the Scotland vs England one that I grew up with. We have been very aware of it arriving as we did during the Rugby World Cup. In fact, not long after we moved into our first property (rental) we were in a local pub watching the final between NZ and Oz. I could get used to watching rugby (watched the NZ vs Oz match last week) but I don't think I'll ever be able to stand to watch a whole cricket match - takes too long!
We are very much enjoying NZ. It's a beautiful country with a sensible pace of life. _________________ Morag Hughson @MoragHughson

In Oz, white bait is just that, its used as bait to catch other fish, we don't eat it.
Vegemite is an Oz tradition, although the manufacturer was bought out by a US company many years ago. Its an acquired taste, on bread, toast or bikkies. I don't really like it. Marmite is on the supermarket shelves, but Vegemite has much more space. _________________ Glenn |

I'm on the lookout for good 'how to drive on the left' training videos. My wife and I will be mostly in NZ and briefly in Oz in March. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

Changing sides when driving is actually fairly easy so long as the car matches the required driving location, which it will do if you're hiring one. Just remember that the driver is always in the dangerous position, I.e in the middle of the road and closest to oncoming traffic.
If you're used to driving in the US (?) then I'd be looking for videos on "how to drive on narrow roads", and "how to get round a roundabout". Apart from Auckland, the traffic nice and quiet here so you have time to breathe. You'll be fine.
Cheers

I think the only time I've truly terrified my wife was driving down a mountain in Wales, where the road was somewhat narrow (a B road for my UK readers) with cute stone walls and a sheer drop of some distance on one side. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Uh, that's encouraging. Yes, we'll be renting/hiring a car.
And, yes, I'm a lifelong right-side driver from the US. So, I guess I'll be looking for a good mood-leveler med, too. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

Verify your insurance is up to date, and ask the rental company when they last serviced the air bags.

Make sure you get the kind that metabolizes fast, and have plenty of reasons for delay in the police station if it's still too soon for a blood test that will have you incarcerated for DUI. Possibly stall tactics include:
- asking for a lawyer from the US embassy
- claiming you're allergic to latex
- claiming you're afraid of needles
- claiming diplomatic immunity
- claiming forum administrator immunity
- claiming the aliens injected you with something when they abducted you
- claiming it's a conspiracy and the sheep are in on it (that worked for me in Wales)
- claiming the needle isn't sharp enough
- claiming the needle is too sharp
- claiming you have a permit for the gun
- claiming they need to hurry because you left the timer running on the bomb _________________ Honesty is the best policy.
