Hi ,
We have websphere client connecting to MQ via JMS using SSL. We faced an issue during the connection and identified issue is with JMS version is not supported.
Is it possible to upgrade only JMS part in webpshere with out upgrading websphere.
Thanks in advance!! |

JMS part is nothing but jar files
No issue in upgrading the jar files
What version of WAS? |

You should open a PMR with WebSphere support to get a reliable answer. |

srikanthc60,
You can manually update the WebSphere MQ JCA Resource Adapter, WMQ-RA, (the component within WebSphere Application Server, WSAS, that handles all communication to a queue manager) from the version shipped within WSAS to another version. This can be done using the "Update RA" option within the WSAS Administration Console for example. The WMQ-RA .jar files should *not* just be copied over and replaced on the file system where WSAS is installed.
As an example, if you are using WSAS V8.5.5.0 which ships WMQ-RA V7.1.0.2, you can manually install the latest WMQ-RA in your WSAS profile which is used in preference to this one. Support for RA in this case will be tied to your WMQ Server Support Contract rather than WSAS (support for the RA shipped within is WSAS is tied to the WSAS Support Contract).
Having said the above, manually updating the level of WMQ-RA in WSAS is generally not good practice and not something that is recommended by IBM. There are a number of reasons why, including:
(a) The version of the WMQ-RA which is embedded within the WSAS installation has been extensively tested in that version of WSAS. To move off this "golden path" increases the chances of encountering issues associated with different combinations.
(b) Every in support version of WMQ-RA is compatible with every in support version of the queue manager.
(c) Manually upgrading the WMQ-RA within WSAS will remove you from the WSAS maintenance cycle - meaning that future WAS fix packs will no longer update the WMQ-RA.
Point (c) is probably the main reason to avoid doing it in my opinion!
If a fix for a known APAR is required then the best option is to apply WSAS maintenance to upgrade the version of WMQ-RA in use. The different WSAS levels and which version of the WMQ-RA they ship is listed here:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=171&uid=swg21248089
The second option is to open a PMR with IBM Support and request an interim fix package for the APAR required and your level of WSAS. A patched WMQ-RA can then be provided which can be installed without introducing the drawbacks listed above. |
