1. Upgraded AIX 5.3 to 7.1
2. Upgraded MQ 7.0.1.6 to 7.1 to 7.5 to 8.0.0.2

3. When strmqm TEST1, the following errors show in the qmgr log:

-- AMQ5657: The system resource RLIMIT_NOFILE is set at an unusually low level for WebSphere MQ.

-- AMQ6308: Failed to gather random data from the operating system.

4. When trying to connect to TEST1 using channel TEST from MQ Explorer running on Win 7.1:

-- AMQ9296: Password protection negotiation failed.

-- AMQ9999: Channel 'TEST' to host 'loopback (127.0.0.1)' ended abnormally.

We've upgraded several servers in the same manner w/out any issues at all. It looked like this upgrade worked also since the queue managers started and ended seemingly normally. But, I couldn't connect using MQ Explorer. I deleted all the logs and just did a start, try to connect and end, and the above are the errors and the order they occurred.

I have no idea where to go with these errors. My guess is there's something missing or misconfigured in AIX? I entered an IBM PMR, but this forum has always been my preferred expert resource.

Thanks for any guidance!

Hi,

1. Could you please ensure there is no problem with the OS and MQ installation before debugging the problems

2. AMQ5657 - Increase the no of open files ulimit

3. AMQ6308 - Try the env variable from the error msg

mqrc AMQ6308

536896264 0x20006308 xecX_E_ENTROPY_COLLECTION_FAILED

ACTION:
...

If the error persists, you can set the AMQ_RANDOM_ENTROPY_ALGORITHM environment variable to change the random data source. Permitted values are '<insert two>'.

4. AMQ9296, AMQ9999 - Check the queue manager errors logs for the cause.

What SVRCONN Channel is being used for the connection?
Perhaps it is using one that is blocked by default.

Seeing the password error could indicate that the connection is expecting a username/password in the connection and MQ 7.5 can't supply that. Can you connect using a V8 MQExplorer.

Every time you reinvent the wheel the more square it gets (anon). If in doubt think and investigate before you ask silly questions.

I'm sorry, we found the problem. The permissions weren't set right on /dev/urandom. All the errors have gone away. Thanks for trying to help!
