I was suprised to still see in the 5.3 manuals (HP-UX Quick Beginnings Guide) quote "The /var/mqm and /var/mqm/log directories must be on a local file system."
Many companies have invested in Network Attached Storage (contact admin) and Storage Area Networks (SANs) and this statement effectively says you can't use them, particularly the contact admin which uses NFS in its implementation. The company I am currently working with use NetApp contact admin disk. Has anyone experience of these or any other contact admin or SAN implementation.
Has everyone else just ignored the statement in the manual?

I have worked on several projects where network storage was used in conjunction with MQ. I haven't ever tried to place /var/mqm or /var/mqm/logs on a network storage device. Generally these are small directoried anyway. The goal is to stick queue manager storage on a netwlrk device so it is available for failover or whatever.
I think the rational behind requiring these directories to be local is that a local file system has higher availability than a network. You may be able to put the directories on the network storage device but you would be running on your own and IBM would probably refuse support or accept any liability for problems associated when doing so.
I shot I would wager it is more of a CYA or legal thing than a technology issue.
PS.. I have not verified that MQSeries installation checkes to see if the directories are local or not.

Take a look at the MC66 and MC6B Support Pacs that explain the ServiceGuard implementation. That talks (sort of) about placing some of the /var/mqm structure on shared disks. Might give some clues.

MC66 I wrote. It was a while back, but although the disks weren't local in the box, they were logically local SCSI or Serial connected, unlike SANs and contact admin config which are over a network.
As for contact admin it works fine. Just wanted to see if anyone else was using them and whether anyone had any issues with IBM support.
