What version ? Version numbers have 4 digits. What effective level ?

This is your first post. You need to own your work. Don't post "it doesn't work, please help" We can't help you.

Are you a developer or a sys admin ?

stdout and stderr are not the error logs.

Look at wherever syslogd is configured to write user messages.

Ignore everything lancelotlinc has to say about effective level. It has absolutely nothing to do with your problem.

The simple fact is that "it worked before, but now it's broken" ALWAYS means "Something changed".

So, what changed?

There is nothing wrong with asking him/her this question. Aside from the true answer, it gauges the level of competence.

One can learn alot from the OP if s/he comes back with 'How do I do that?'

Its already apparent the OP has not the knowledge to accomplish the task at hand. Obviously the problem was introduced by the restart. Was the restart to apply maintenance? If so, was the effective level set properly ?

Not setting the effective level during maintenance application is a clue that the OP did not follow the step-by-step instructions or perhaps not even consult the readme that came with the maintenance package.

SO - there is some relevance to the question I asked. I think it rude of you to tell the OP to disregard it.

I told the OP to disregard it because I have seen several cases where you have worked with a poster to answer this particular question, over several days, and at the end of that, the poster still had made no progress on the problem they were actually trying to solve.

This is not a training site. If it were, you wouldn't need to keep telling people to go get training, you'd simply start handing it out.

Effective Level almost always has absolutely no bearing on any particular problem being discussed.

At best, it's a shibboleth - that is, what you are advocating, that it tells you how skilled someone is. At worst, it's a waste of time.

Write posts that address the question being asked. I find it rude of you to write posts that don't.

So you restarted the box, and that's the only change? Are you sure that's the only change?

Did you log in as the same user? did you perform the same steps after logging in, to apply mqsiprofile and etc?

Did you look at the errors in the system log, as mentioned?

I consider my responses applicable to the problem at hand. No one is putting a gag over your keyboard, you can add value to the discussion if you like.

No one is forcing any one to accept my advice or not. Sometimes my advice helps, sometimes not.

I think that applies to all of us.

Whether someone wants to know why some parameter is important or not, its helping push posters into digging deeper for a better understanding. Why is he asking me to check the effective level? What relevance does the effective level have on my problem?

You are correct: serializing keystrokes into a forum is not a replacement for proper training. The InfoCentre does offer alot of valuable information. Digging through it to find out how to display effective level might help the OP stumble onto something. Its better than playing twenty questions.

There used to be an article around here somewhere that suggested "Before you post, read this." Where was that sticky ?

I always wondered what in the world Schrödinger's cat was? Then Fedora 19 named it's update "Schrödinger's cat". Odd. And now Schrödinger's cat is being promoted on today's Google logo. What the heck is Schrödinger's cat I thought. So I clicked, I read, I became enlightened.

Not unlike the OP on this post. What's the cause of his Schrödinger's cat quandry with WMB not starting after nothing changed? How does it relate to Schrödinger's cat or effective level?

The Cat

You're in a small minority.

No, that would be me.

What advice do you ever offer, apart from "get some training"?

I'd always assumed you were perfect and infallible. Certainly the site you work at seems to be.

In this instance, effective level has no relevance to the problem. It's just you trying to make points for your crusade.

How? No, don't answer that.

Why ask? It doesn't mention training, POWER artchitecture, CI or any of the only things which seem to be worth mentioning.

Have you ever considered starting a blog? It might be a faster route in your quest for immortality, and allow others the option of reading your thoughts, or not.

Seriously? One of the most famous thought experiments in history? How did you miss that?

I did.

I told the poster to ignore effective level.

You said that was rude -in your opinion. I explained things that you do that are rude - in my opinion.

This has been fun ! The Cat wants to know , if nothing changed , shall we open the box , possibly look in the syslog to see what the real root cause is ?

Well it's advice. Advice which has already been offered but we can work up to original thought in stages.

I'm so glad you agree with what I've suggested the OP do twice in this thread already.
