Dear experts ,

when a BAPI call is throwing an exception is it always of type
RecordNotFoundException ?

For instance I get an error
"com.ibm.j2ca.sap.exception.SapBAPIException: Error data exceeds max length for BAPI attribute PURCHASEORDER(PURCHASEORDER"

But the text in the RecoverableException is 'throw a RecordNotFoundException'.

There is a difference between really not finding a record and having any other error.

Is this cause due to the returns value of the BAPI or otherwise said can the BAPI change this behaviour ?

Stack traces are often non-non-sensical. Like birdy num nums (Peter Sellers, "The Party").

To derive the true meaning, you need to collect and examine all data available, including root of the exception list and all children in-between.
