Why is this so confusing? (hey, maybe its me!)

Where is one supposed to download the latest install files for MB Explorer (MBX)?

My Google Machine points me to the IS02 Support Pack:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24012457
Hey, that link even lists the latest version 8.0.0.2. Seems like a winner EXCEPT...

Page 10 of this IBM PowerPoint
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27024453&aid=1
says:
Quote:
"IS02 must be removed before installing v8 MB Explorer"

Uh, OK. So I guess I shouldn't use IS02.

Searching on this fine site gets me to this post, where mqjeff says:
http://www.mqseries.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=61935&start=0
Quote:
MBX is available on FixCentral as a separate download file with the Runtime updates. "8.0.0-WS-MBX-WINIA32-FP0001.exe", for example.

OK, so does that mean the 8.0.0.2 Fix Pack for MB Explorer
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=849&context=SW900&dc=D400&dc=D410&dc=D420&dc=D430&q1=WebSphere+Message+Broker+v8.0+Fix+Pack+Maintenance&uid=swg24034617&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&lang=en
is not just a Fix Pack but the complete package for the latest version of the entire MBX?

mqjeff also says in that thread:
Quote:
MBX comes with the runtime package.

OK, here's ANOTHER option apparently.

Oy!

Where am I supposed to download the latest version of MBX if I want to install on desktops that have MQ Client 7.5.0.1 and the 7.5 version of MQ Explorer (via the MS0T Support Pack)? I plan on adding MS0P as well.

I assume Hursley is maintaining and upgrading the IS02 support pac specifically for that purpose - to allow one to use the MB Explorer on a machine that doesn't have anything else MB on it.

Yet they also provide a migration powerpoint document that specifically says you have to get rid of IS02 before adding MB Explorer.

hmmmmm....
Well, the Powerpoint was put together by a couple RTP L2's 13 months ago...
Whereas the IS02 update for MB8.0.0.2 was done by a Hursley WMB developer 13 days ago...
But, it doesn't really make any difference when you come down to it. If you click on the HTTP link on the IS02 support pac for the MB8 Windows version, guess where it takes you?
Yep, http://www-933.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/swg/selectFixes?parent=ibm~WebSphere&product=ibm/WebSphere/WebSphere+Message+Broker&release=8.0.0.2&platform=Windows+32-bit,+x86&function=all&useReleaseAsTarget=true

And guess what else takes you to that page? Yep.

When I installed MBX 8002 on MQ 7.5, I get this message when I try to launch MQ explorer

"The MQExplorer executable launcher was unable to locate its companion shared library".

Any ideas?

I assume you had a prior version installed? A quick fix, instead of launching MQ Explorer, hunt through your start programs list for the IBM WMB 8.0.0.2 folder, in there find the IBM WMB Explorer and click on that to start it.

Now I have to guess which IBM documentation to trust?

This is ridiculous.

Giving the IS02 Support Pack path a whirl, I have to choose between downloading a file called is02v4_wmqv7.zip, or maybe 8.0.0-WS-MBX-WINIA32-FP0002.exe. No description or title of what these files are, I have to guess what they might be based on a convaluted file name.

OK, whatever, I'll guess I want 8.0.0-WS-MBX-WINIA32-FP0002.exe.

That takes me to a page where one of the 3 choices is for "Fix Pack 8.0.0.2 for WebSphere Message Broker Explorer on Windows 32 and 64 bit " OK, now is that just a Fix Pack for a previous install of MBX, or is it the full install of MBX at version 8.0.0.2. Beats me! Lets guess (again) that it is the full version. Lets see what the Install Instructions link tells us from this page. Opens up a new window, to a page that talks about version 7!!!!

Grrrr.....

OK, I click the link to download it, IBM asks me to log in AGAIN with my ID for like the 3rd time, and finally I can download some file under the heading of "Fix Pack 8.0.0.2 for WebSphere Message Broker Explorer on Windows 32 and 64 bit".

I wonder what I exactly I downloaded.

If I choose "is02v4_wmqv7.zip" from the IS02 Support Pack page, I eventually get to a page that offers me seven choices of something called "WebSphere Message Broker Explorer Plug-in SupportPac", no explanation of the differences, leaving the user to look at the weird file names to try and decipher what each might be for.

I guess the one called 8.0.0-WS-MBX-WINIA32.exe is the best match.

I download THAT.

Now I have 2 files on my PC:
8.0.0-WS-MBX-WINIA32.exe (116 MB)
8.0.0-WS-MBX-WINIA32-FP0002.exe (160 MB)

What to do now? Do I install 8.0.0-WS-MBX-WINIA32.exe first? I wonder what that will install. Will I need to then install 8.0.0-WS-MBX-WINIA32-FP0002.exe on top of that? Or can I just go with 8.0.0-WS-MBX-WINIA32-FP0002.exe straight away - maybe its the complete MBX? Who knows...

Perhaps I'll flip a coin to decide which one to install first.

Peter, you could maybe also send Dominic a note and ask him to get that IS02 webpage cleaned up.....

Regarding your chosen download, I did look at the directory where I had previously installed the first MB8 Explorer and replaced it with the latest in the same location, by merely double-clicking the ....FP002 version (as I said above, whether you come from the IS02 webpage or the "one stop shop", you end up at the same place for that download), and there is nothing left over from my earlier version install. I didn't pay close attention to what happened on the latest install, but since even the install.log shows nothing from the prior, I'm guessing the install's first step was to delete everything old. The documentation does say you can only have one copy, and/but the new version takes care of making sure.

Or, instead, fill in the comment form at the bottom of it, and get more directed attention more immediately...

Or, since it's a Category 3 SupportPac...

Just Open A PMR.

Hmmm, I cannot ever remember getting anything that remotely resembled "immediate" when I've used the comment or feedback (especially the feedback) forms. My hat is off to you if you have.

Dominic's a busy guy.

Granted, the comment form also goes through a number of hands before it arrives at someone that can respond... But the big reason you likely have never received a response is that you didn't include a response email address...

As a supportPac author, there are a number of times I've received messages from a comment form that gave no mechanism to respond back.

I can't claim "immediate", but I typically get an answer a week or so later. Which exceeds my expections because I wasn't expecting a response.

Good suggestions.

Typed up a nice comment explaining the difficulty I have determining what to install if I want MBX 8.0.0.2 on a Windows 7 PC that only has MQ Client 7.5.0.1 and MS0T version 7.5. Hmmm, no form asking for my contact info. I'll hit the enter key to add a line break and provide my info - whoops, the enter key submitted my comments without any contact info. Sigh. I submitted another comment saying they should have a field that prompts the user for contact info, and provided my email before hitting enter.

I'll open the PMR now.

I'll share what I learn.

85828 L6Q 000, for those that can look at other people's PMRs.
