Yes, we have asked our local IBM sales rep.
Yes, we have read "Virtualization Capacity Licensing for Sun & Fujitsu Environments"
But we are still not sure of how it goes.
We have a node with 32 cores and we install MQ Server on the global zone. We create a sparse zone that inherits the installation from the global zone and configure our queue manager there. We lock the sparse zone to use only one core and use sub-capacity licensing.
How many cores do we have to pay license for? |

The PVU license is " (defined within the PVU table by Processor Vendor, Brand, Type and Processor Model Number)."
You must purchase 32 cores worth of PVUs unless you get a waiver from your IBM sales rep.
I am not an IBM sales rep, I do not work for IBM; but this is the letter of the law, which can be excepted by IBM in a customer licensing agreement.
The fact that you can configure the runtime to reside and use only a portion of the hardware is not provided for in the standard PVU license. _________________ http://leanpub.com/IIB_Tips_and_Tricks

You don't need to if you use sub-capacity licensing. Sub-capacity licensing certainly applies if you install the product code locally on a root zone. My question is if it applies when you install the product on global zone but inherit and use it on a sparse zone.
I'm not so very familiar with solaris virtualization, but isn't it so that you don't actually run anything else but the virtual servers on top of the global zone? |

Never mind, I found another way to solve my problem.
Thanks anyway for the replies, lancelotlinc and Michael Dag.
Tthat's how it often goes: you need to articulate the question to find out the solution yourself.
By the way, just to be sure, if you have two separate installations of MQ on the same machine, you still need to pay for only on license? |

the only one that can answer those questions is IBM!
you pay per installation / machine (full - or sub-capacity)
per installation you can create as many queuemanagers as you like ... _________________ Michael
