Dear All,
The server team is planning to upgrade the Linux OS from 32-bit to 64-bit.We have MQ server running on the it.I know we will have impact on MQ after the upgrade. Just wondering if we need to uninstall the current MQ server and go for 64-bit installable ?
OS Version : 32 Bit Oracle Enterprise Linux
MQ version : 7.0.1.3
Thanks,
Chandan |

How are your OS Team planning to upgrade the server because if it means blowing away the current OS and doing a fresh install of the new OS your question is moot? _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

It does not seem to be a fresh install. There are other software's like Siebel which seems to be OK with the upgrade. This is what the change description says
"Upgrade 4 MTs from 8x32VM to 16x72VM and OEL5.3 32bit to OEL5.5 64bit"
Thanks,

Absolutely meaningless without detail - I plan to upgrade my car, but to do so means getting another, completely new model. Your OS Team is making a major change to infrastructure, and all interested parties, i.e. those with responsibility for software hosted on that infrastructure, should have been included in the detail change planning. _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

You are absolutely right. The impact is going to be remarkable as it is prod box. |

Why do you keep saying "seem"? Why do you not directly ask the OS team what they're doing? Why not directly reach out to the Siebel team and ask what they're doing?
Why not read this and see what you need to do as a result of this work? _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

So if this is prod box being changed, what did you need to do when they tested the upgrade in a different environment? Because it's inconceivable they're applying a change of this impact directly onto production without testing it first. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Ah - the "project doesn't have the time to test" methodology. A close ally of the "I can save money by not building support into my project and dumping it into the operations' team's lap".

The upgrade has not been implemented in lower environments. This is how Oracle works i guess
A debate has been triggered to reject the upgrade request. |

IMHO Oracle doesn't know if it's being used to run a Test, QA or Prod environment. It's more likely to be how your sys admins work. See comments above regarding saving time & money by pushing onto other teams. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.
