Hi,

As many of you will know, last month I resigned from IBM for various reasons which I won't go into right now. I haven't got any concrete plans about what to do next but I was hoping to spend more time writing MQ utilities. To that end I had hoped to be able to continue to support and enhance my SupportPacs (MA01, MO03, MO71, MO72 and MA94). However, IBM is currently deciding whether they will let me. So, while they decide you are welcome to direct any questions about them to IBM. (Note : this posting has been edited by Admin to remove an email mentioned here)

I will also still be subscribed to the various MQ fora although clearly my email address has changed since I am no longer an IBM employee,

Cheers,

Paul.

Welcome to life outside IBM - you'll soon wonder how you found time for work

Does it count as "the same" supportPac if you rewrite it in Java to run in Eclipse, instead?

Will it provide the same level of customer reassurance if the same supportPacs are released as Category 4 supportPacs rather than Category 2?

To be honest I'm not certain. I assume that if I re-write the same programs then I am entitled to do that but I'm not certain yet. It depends what they count as intellectual property.

Cheers,
P.

If I were certain, I'd have done something other than ask a question.

It's an interesting thought, certainly. But maybe that gets us back to intellectual property.

I've always savored the opportunity to start over and rewrite from scratch certain programs I wrote previously incorporating the maturity of my years into the great ideas I once implemented many years ago.

Think about the Microsoft battle over the IBM PC BIOS intellectual property. They paid a guy to write the business specification for a replacement BIOS then handed that spec to unawares software developers and bought a Caribbean island for the guy to live out his life on.

You could do something similar. Write a feature spec, give it to a third party, have them stub something out, then you fill in the functions. In this manner, you can prove you did not use IBM's intellectual property to develop the new product.
