Does IBM support using the 6.0.2.10 client (API) to connect to a 7.0.1.15 queue manager?

I am aware MQ6 is past End Of Life, but unsure whether what we're currently doing is a big mistake waiting to fail. Is there any general guidance on what your client version needs to be, to be compatible with a given QM version?

Background: Our code currently connects to two queue managers: one on MQ7, the other on MQ6. The queues on MQ are being migrated to the one on MQ7 but it will be 6 months before they're all moved. So in the meantime we still need to be able to connect to both MQ6 and MQ7 QMs.

Support is based on the version of the queue manager, not the version of the client.

That doesn't mean you won't get told to try a v7 client if something goes wrong....

In general it's better to upgrade your clients. Particularly, v7 gives a number of advantages over v6 client in terms of threading and channel sharing and etc.

It will work fine.

I forget the exact range that IBM aim to support (when they first release a new version), but it's at least the previous version.

In practice most older versions will work, certainly 5.3 and later.

Thanks both -- that's good to know. A colleague was trying to tell me the v6 client is "unsupported" against MQ7. I've told him two posters without 14,000 MQ posts between them say otherwise :P

Quite.

Certainly at the time of release (of WMQ v7) it would have official interoperability with all other versions, which were currently available at that date.

I asked this very question of a certain IBMer at Hursley and he mentioned that they do test even older versions than that, even if they are not granted the status of officially supported.

The channel protocol is more or less standardised over versions.

I can also tell you that we still rely on this combination working, even though all MQv6 software is out of support now. We will get around to upgrading the downlevel clients at some point
