Hi,
i am quite new in the WebsphereMQ area and i hope i can get a few insights from you guys.
I want to set up a standard messaging environment on iSeries, meaning a point2point connection to some other MQSeries machine outside of my control.
My questions are:
1. what is the latest WebsphereMQ for iSeries? I didnt saw v5.3.
2. Do i need also the WebsphereMQ Client?
3. Are the java classes included in the Client or Server?
4. Are there any "major" problems when communicating with older versions?
The programming should be no problem, but i am dazzled of all the available products and extensions.
Thx a lot |

Hi,
Trying to answer your questions:
1. what is the latest WebsphereMQ for iSeries? I didnt saw v5.3.
You are right, latest version is WMQ 5.3.
Have a look at:
http://www.ibm.com/software/integration/mqfamily/platforms/supported/wsmq_for_iseries_5_3.html
2. Do i need also the WebsphereMQ Client?
The WMQ client (available on http://www.ibm.com/software/integration/mqfamily/platforms/supported/wsmq_for_iseries_5_3.html) offers you to connect to an other WMQ manager for free but using a synchronous connexion.
So.. if your purpose is P2P connexion on the same mashine, the client doesn't offer you any real advantage. For multi-boxes communications, don't forget that you will lost the asynchronous advantages.
3. Are the java classes included in the Client or Server?
Since the latest release, (WMQ 5.3) java and jms classes are now included in the WMQ client and server.
4. Are there any "major" problems when communicating with older versions?
No, except using new functions like SSL, messages sizes, clustering which didn't exist in the 'first' versions..
Hope it helsp |

@bh
thx a lot for your answers. Very cleary answered, one thing i have to dig into:
Does this mean, if i only need synchronous connections between my machine and some other machine where the WMQ server runs, its sufficient to run the client on my machine?

Hi,
If WMQ server(s) is(are) running on other(s) machine(s) and you need/want to communicate using a synchronous way, you could have only a WMQ client, running on your machine. So... you're right ! ) but don't forget that if no connexion is available (for any reason: network, application maintenance, aso), you will have to manage, on your machine, where the WMQ client is installed, the lack of possibility to get or put a message, that's all.
Hope it helps. Get a look on this forum searching for 'client, iSeries, AS400...' to find some tips or good remarks. Have a look too on the IBM support pack site (http://www.ibm.com/software/integration/support/supportpacs/product.html#wmq) and or red book, you could find some interesting materials. |
