Here at British Airways we are running MQ on
AIX, Solaris, NT, OS/390, TPF and VAX - all good fun!
One problem we've not cracked is how to calculate the values to be used in /etc/system on the Solaris boxes.
Doing it by trail and error not only looks bad to others but is also very disruptive
with all the reboots.
Does any one have any rules of thumb?

Yes it makes some suggestions but these are
not always adequate/correct for boxes with large Oracle databases, many queues, many messages etc.
They are good enough to get MQ to run but we
find they are not good enough in the rough and tumble of the real world.

This may not be the optimal solution, but I haven't run into any major problems with it. Namely, set all kernel parameters to the soft/hard limit. It doesn't seem to degrade performance any. This may be a bad rule of thumb (feel free to let me know) but I've noticed in my experience that on machines with MQ, Oracle, and possible another Enterprise level software product, we usually end up racheting the kernel values up and up (trial and error) until we hit the limits anyway. So why not cut to the chase?
