Hello. I'm completely new to CICS and MQ. While MQ resources seem to be readily available, I have not had much luck finding CICS information on the Net or in hard copy. Most of the informational documents I've found (webpages, manuals, etc) are geared much more towards people already familiar with CICS.
Can any of you suggest any webpages or books that could help someone at a beginner's level become familiar with CICS concepts/commands/architecture?

| You should check out a company called 'Circle' they are long established CICS training experts. One word of caution...CICS is a complicated and broad subject that can take years become familiar with fully. |

What O/S platform are you interested in?
CICS originated on the IBM mainframe (System/360) years and years ago and evolved over the years (360->370->390->z/OS) and is still evolving adapting to the latest Web technologies.
It's now also available on the distributed platforms (Unix, WinNT/2K) as the TXSeries product.
Have you checked IBM's CICS product main web site at:

CICS and MQSeries go well togther, not that surprising when you consider that both of them are developed at IBM Hursley in the UK.
Non-mainframe CICS has never really achieved the same acceptance level as the mainframe product though.
There is the MQ-CICS bridge - which I know little about - but you can buy a book called "Designing and Programming CICS applications" ISBN 1-56592-676-5 which covers it.
Most sites just use the MQI from CICS applications - this works like any other MQI application other than CICS does the MQCONN for you. We have developed an API wrapper to simplify programming, or I suppose you could use the AMS (AMI?) from IBM to do this.
The great thing about CICS/MQ is the good transactional support. Make sure that you use the format MQSTR in your messages so that they can be converted to other character sets if read on other platforms. |
