Brandon,

Just a food for thought. I was wondering if there are at least a couple more topics added to this forum(i know there are quite a few already...:)..).

1) With 5.3 coming into picture there would be tons of SSL questions. Hence i think having a seperate thread for this would be great. Because SSL in itself is a huge and confusing topic. And so it would be better if all the q/a pertaining to that is under one thread so as to easily locate it. I think all the OAM/2035 issues from previous versions of MQ could also get in there.

2) Not sure if we can have one thread solely dedicated for this or not. But just a thought again. I see every 10 days at least 1 post asking for guidance to appear for certification exams. And the reply. Same old one. Search. New members may be wary about many things and one being this, i guess. Hence if there is an explicit thread dedicated to certifications that would assist in people in getting to the topic of their choice faster.

I am not sure what overhead would these be. And if it is too much, then i wouldn't bother.

Just trying to help.

Cheers
Kumar

Kumar,
Thanks for the feedback. As to your questions, I had hoped to solve such issues with the MQSeries FAQ. Once we had a sufficient amount of responses to a particular question, I could package the entire topic and move it to the MQSeries FAQ forum. However, when I did this, it appeared that very few people actually looked in it before asking the same question. The same goes for the search button. It seems that no matter how many times you remind people or how big and bold you make the "search" button, someone will always neglect to use it. I am mulling over making another serious attempt at the FAQ though, possibly as part of an upgrade to the site which will make the frontpage more like a "nuke" site, with news, links, most popular posts, etc... Kinda like what they have at slashdot...

I wonder how much work it would be to add an auto-reply to questions by new posters, with the results of a search done on keywords in their message?

I realize this isn't going to be very accurate, and that identifying keywords might be hard.

But if something came up that said 'we think your question might be addressed by these messages, and these entries in the faq <list>', it might be helpful at least in reminding other posters that there ARE archives and faqs to search.

Coincidentally I just listened to an academic friend's talk, who has been researching just that - an automated email reply system. His was a bit different though in that he had a database full of questions with their corresponding answers, and then would try to see if new questions matched any already in the database and send the appropriate answer automatically.
Long story short, it was very HARD

Sure, but your friend was doing it to academic standards of rigor.

Granted, that might not be as stringent as what some of us deal with at work, but it's certainly more stringent than what's required here. In addition, he was trying parse questions, and probably extract semantic meaning. Or at least, extract words in an order specific manner. In other words, a much harder problem than what I'm suggesting.

What I'm talking about is probably as simple as detecting the appearance of any of a predefined set of single words (with no order dependance or semantic meaning) in the message - and then creating links to search results for those keywords.

Even identifying that a message contains a given set of keywords - like {"Java", "2059"} or {"HCon", "thread"} isn't really much harder, provided you are working with a reasonably small set of keywords and groups (I'd say only include the common reason codes).

And, again, only do it for posts by 'newbies' - to help limit unnecessary clutter.
