I have Redhat 2.1, with kernel 2.4.9-e.72enterprise #1 SMP. After installing MQ 5.3 on this box, all MQ commands, starting with setmqcap, are simply hanging. The file permissions on these MQ commands appear ok -

72 -r-sr-s--- 1 mqm mqm 65648 Jun 17 2003 setmqcap
72 -r-xr-x--- 1 mqm mqm 65648 Jun 17 2003 setmqccap
272 -r-sr-s--- 1 mqm mqm 273876 Jun 17 2003 setmqprd
8 -r-sr-s--- 1 mqm mqm 7630 Jun 17 2003 strmqcsv
344 -r-sr-s--- 1 mqm mqm 344909 Jun 17 2003 strmqm

ps -ef on the box shows 4 processes of setmqcap or other MQ commands, running.

Does anyone know what's causing these commands to hang?

Did the MQ installation go smoothly?

Any errors in the ERRORs directory?

Why are you installing an unsupported version of WMQ?

So? Just because you're using unsupported software on other boxes that's no reason to use it here. This is an ideal oppertunity to upgrade.

Are the other boxes using the same version of OS?

I would say it's higher risk to use 5.3 than to use version 6 or 7, and of course you are on your own as far as any support from IBM.

But you should at least apply the latest (last) fixpack to 5.3.

That is the most out of date version on MQ, on the most out of date Linux distro I have heard of, for years.

It might not even be possible to run MQ on that kernel version

Google for the terms: mq linux kernel 2.4 LD_ASSUME_KERNEL

I cannot promise, but it might help.

As others have (almost) said, it is a bad idea to install software that is so old that only old people can remember it.

Hey!@ My first MQ was 2.1.

Which was mvic's point I think...

If the other boxes you have that are running v5.3 are using the same OS version, check their configuration to see how they're doing it.

If they've got upgraded OS, your course is clear.

But whatever happens, it's ridiculous for your organization to be using a version of WMQ that old anywhere. I hope whoever is in charge of managing business risk is fully briefed on how exposed you are.

Mine was 2.2.1, so in fact I was counting myself among the "old". If it helps..

Since then (distributed platforms, mind you)
5.0
5.1
5.2
5.2.1 (IIRC)
5.3
6.0
7.0
7.0.1
7.1
