We are currently on WMB 6.1 and evaluating our migration approach either to v7 or v8...

Can anyone share their experence on what criteria one consider to v7 or directly v8

Any pointing is much appreciated

My personal view, if your going to pay the pain of migration, go to the latest stable GA release. Which at this time is V8.

WMB is the best supported ESB product worldwide. PMRs are the way of life. The quality of technical support behind the product is worldclass.

This means, you will not be problem free, but when you do have difficulties, resolutions are forthcoming in a timely manner.

The landscape changed dramatically with V8 through the DFDL parser. It's light years ahead of the parser in V7. I hear also that mapping nodes are new and shiney.

The section in the v8 InfoCenter on migration seems to list these. Though one could make the point that the Applications & Libraries isn't a depcreated feature but a new way of working.

Does it matter? As v8 includes (as does v7) the ability to co-exist with v6.1 why not have both until you're happy?

There are a few things in V6.1 that you won't find in V8: the Config Manager, system database (both of which give the broker fewer moving parts and make it loads easier to manage), as well as the publish/subscribe engine, topologies, collectives, subscriptions etc. and SCADA and Multicast nodes (which have all been replaced by concepts in the MQ queue manager).

As for gotchas, there are none that I know of, but take a look at this doc that the service team keeps up to date (it'll also cover V8 migration as and when issues are found): http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21255570

Do you mean to say that there are...

No issues migrating to V7.0?

And that the page does not seem to have been updated since 2007?

I know that IBM software is good (yeah, I can remember WBIMB V5) but...

Whats about migrating a flow project with multiple flows & BARs?
In V8 you can create only 1 single BAR within a project !!!

No.

Why do you think that?

This is a nice list of what new in WMB 8.
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/integration/messagebrokerproductline/versions/index.html

It seems focused on showing the Version 8 column with 100% green check marks to show nothing but all the new stuff added. It would be nice to see that list expanded to show the things that go away between version, so that the v6.1 column would have green check marks (Config Manager) and v7 / v8 would not.

All versions of all (complex) software have bugs. If its a decision between 7.0.0.3 and 8.0.0.0, I'd go with the one with multiple fix packs out already, unless you need a specific feature in 8. The major bugs will have been discovered by others and fixed in the version that has had multiple Fix Packs. Of course, if everyone did that.....

Regarding fixpacks, MB8 GA already has an APAR fix in it that we would have to until MB7.0.4 to get (it was also in MB6.1.0.10, which is where we are). And since MB8.0.1 is scheduled for release in 2Q 2012 as is 7.0.4, I'm guessing it will be just as good. Anyway, that is where my client is headed in a few months, from 6.1 to 8.
Two notes:
1. I believe scavr is correct, a single bar per application. Here is from a Q&A after a "What's New" webinar from Ant Phillips (Hursley) last week:
Q: I am trying to migrate a message flow project from WMB7. My project has multiple flows plus a single BAR for each flow and I imported into an application. How can I create multiple BARs within a single application?
A: At the moment an application is deployed in its entirety - you can't select a subset of the flows for deployment. To achieve that, you will need to break the application up into separate applications each of which is deployed and managed separately.
2. The MB8 GA has a new graphical mapper, but is incompatible with the v6 and 7 Mapping Node. Until they finish up with and release a mapping migration tool, all old maps will need to be maintained with the old Toolkit. The old maps will run in v8 runtime, you just can't modify them in the Toolkit. But as I said above, FP1 is due out in Q2.... And Hursley has always been pretty good on keeping to their schedules.

It's an easy upgrade from v7 to v8 anyway. I wouldn't recommend that anyone installs 6.1 now as a starting point.

I personally think the 6 month gap between WMB fixpacks is a little too long and would like to see it reduced to 4 months, or to alternate between new function and pure fixes every 3 months.

Alternatively IBM could publish the details of fixes that are in the pipeline so that customers could ask for relevant ones as interim fixes to prevent problems rather than wait until they experience them.

I believe that all APARs are published to IBM's website in various ways when they are packaged/ready based on the PMRs that generated them.

So, yes, this is already done, if you go looking. Unfortunately, I don't entirely have a handy link.

Can they be listed by product? I've only ever found them by searching on keywords (after getting a problem).

So if we go to here, we see lots of interesting stuff.

Including, for example, "Flashes and Alerts'.

And RSS Feeds of Support Content.

They've made this more "user friendly" than it used to be, it used to be that you could just kind of go to support and then to WebSphere MQ, but you have to jump through a few more hoops these days with the selecting of specific products from boxes and etc. But it's all there, if you poke at it with a stick.

And if you go to the "Plan and install" tab, you can find the link to fixes by version. But that may or may not be entirely current with released APARs. But the RSS feed or some of the other kinds of things will be.
