I don't give career advice, for reasons obvious to anyone who's seen my career. Here, I'll just say challenges are good but training is essential for this challenge. Nothing about the mainframe is the same as any other platform; in WMQ terms the principles are identical (queues, channels, queue managers, etc) but their implementation is completely different.

Be sure the training is not limited to WMQ on z/OS but is much, much broader based to include JCL, ISPF and the OS concepts of DASD & LPARs as a minimum.

Or you'll take your still-useful WMQ knowledge and drive yourself mad trying to get commands through runmqsc (which doesn't exist on z/OS).

Nor does the command prompt you run it from either.

Also a good opertunity to extract some formal WMQ training from your management, which would be of assistance given your earlier posts, displayed level of knowledge and stated intent to win the Nobel Prize for WMQ one day.

Hence my comment about formal training. You can learn to climb a mountain by reading books & practicing on hills, but it speeds the process if a qualified professional walks you through which axe to use on what rock, and which are the best knots to use on safety ropes.

Just because you got trained by a guy who's never climbed Everest doesn't mean you'll never climb Everest.

You've mentioned that. And every Nobel Prize winner got a significant part of their education from people who've never won the Nobel Prize.

If they do, think carefully. I cannot overstate how different z/OS is from any other OS and you're going to walk a long and painful road without help.

That's not any reflection on you, nor am I talking about WMQ. It's unlike Windows or any of the Unix flavours, with an architecture & concepts all it's own. I remember one highly qualified Unix admin who'd been offered a transfer to z/OS system programming or the highway throwing his pen on his desk and shouting:

"There's no command prompt! How can you have a machine that doesn't accept commands at a prompt??"

(Will all experienced z/OS people please refrain from mentioning the console? It's not relevant to the thrust of my point and I don't accept it's the same thing)

hmmm I understand then i think I will realy need a training cause without proper training i wont be able to handle the architecture, firstly i will need to know the Z/OS,

but if they say yes to training it will be fun, I love to learn tuff things.

it will be like when i started when i started learning object oriented programing strainght ahead with out having any previous knowledge of programming, and that too when i was a biology student.

No it will be harder. Any bookshop carries "teach yourself ...... " books for general OOP and all the languages that support it. The languages themselves have English verbs and the compilers conform to the usual precipts of applications on their platforms.

z/OS has it's roots in the original mainframes of the 1960s, devised and designed by engineers and technologists who, like doctors and lawyers, invented their own language and terms (and for much the same reasons).

That's not to say you can't pick it up single handed, in the same way you can pass a bar exam without law school. But it will take longer, and the Perry Mason wanabe will bash you so far into the ground you could be used as a tent peg when it comes to court.

I'm just saying. For all I know (or care) you could be the world's smartest guy and will be given the top job at Hursley in 5 years. If so, I'll read the announcement with interest.

I never said you wouldn't. Nor did I say that you couldn't read a book, buy a rope and one day climb Everest.

I just said it will be a long, painful process. With a few broken bones along the way.

To complete the mountaineering analogy, I'll close with these words of wisdom:

"Pride doth come before a fall"

I mentioned above there are no non-IBM books on this, nor are there "tutorials" on z/OS; the subject is too large.

Start here, then move onto this.

It's a shame (given your much-vaunted skill at learning) you didn't notice 2 key facts:

a) The most recent book is 11 years old
b) Those are the same books (including the z/OS ones) which are in the current WMQ InfoCenter.

So you could have found that by clicking the link at the top of this page.

Also your link has no books on z/OS generally.
