I have a problem with the server con channels going into a continuous binding state when applications do a mqconn. It doesn't happen everytime, it seems to be hit or miss. These are Java applications connecting to MQSeries 5.2 on an Windows 2000 Advanced server. Has anyone seen this? Thanks!

Are you sure that it is not a resource issue. I have seen SVRCONN channels with long disconnect intervals cause similar problems. What happens is that clients don't disconnect quickly when done (or not at all).... One thing to look for is IPPROCS and OPPROCS since channel recievers actually hold the queue open for output.

If this is really the problem then you can increase the maximum channel connections allowed... But doing this only prolongs the problem but might allow some of the client recievers to disconnect.

Hope this helps.

Yes I did look into the IPPROCS and OPPROCS on the channels. The problem only exists when the client channel does the initial connection to the QM. I've been telling them that it is the calling program causing the "binding" issue. The problem with this, is they will connect fine one day and on another, it starts binding. I've looked at the health of the network at the start of the binding issue. The network was fine. We have over 300 other channels running without issue. The thing I cannot figure out is, this is a random problem. It will happen on one channel one day, and on another channel the next day. I'm pulling my hair out on this one!

When I have seen transient errors like this it sometimes resolves down to a limit of some sort…. Are you sure that you are not exceeding the max number of open objects or the max handles allowed? Any system resource issues; memory, CPU, anything like that? Are you generating any errors in logs or dumps on either side? It may be time to talk to IBM support.

No, My max channels is set at 700. We are only using between 200 to 400 channels at a time. Most of the binding issues are when the channels do the initial startup. At this time, the channel count starts from 0 to 220 channels. MQ is installed on a servers with 6 1.7 Ghz processors and 2GB of RAM. My CPU spike is only at 4% and memory usage at 400Mb. I'm on a 100Mb network and only using 6% of the total pipe at peak. I do think it is time to call IBM. Thanks for the Help!

Yup... Have confidence that when you go through the normal checklist of items then feel free to contact support. There is no shame in it.. You pay for it and should use it.. Our time is limited and we don't have time to spend days figuring out these things. If it is a common problem then they will have a solution for you quickly... If not then you would have had to call them anyway.
