Remember that this will put a load on the system especialy if you are accessing another system such as a DB or something like SAP.
You could code a test rqst/resp into your WSDL's. In these cases, you just return a pre canned response. Perhaps the Timestamp of the last DB request.

Very true. However, the point of these type of checks for us was to do something like a 'real world performance' end-to-end type of measurement, so adding doing another query/lookup didn't have too much of an impact. However, we try to stagger out the checks to make sure that the load is minimized (for example, one check every 5-10 minutes or so).
