Typical conversation at the IBM Webmasters den:

"Morning Bill, what shall we do today?"
"Morning Jim, well we haven't touched the ESR support page for a while, how about that?"
"Good idea, Jim - what shall we do to it?"
"hmmm, for starters - move it to another random, hard-coded node-number in the URL of course."
"Of course, goes without saying - standard procedure. Anything else?"
"Well, we'll keep all the existing user IDs and passwords, but lose their product list - so they'll be forced to enter them all again."
"Like it! We've changed the names of most of the products anyway. And let's not call problem reporting ESR anymore - some of them are catching on - let's go back to PMR"
"Oh yeah, don't forget to put some bumpf in the front about enhancing their experience - like it's some sort of entertainment we're offering".

Almost as bad as recorded telephone answer portals:

Press 1 if you are a current member wishing to re-register;
Press 2 if you are a current member but have not re-registered;
Press 3 if you are not a current member but are re-registering to become a current member;
Press 4 if you have re-registered as a current member but you are not actually a current member;
Press 5 if you re-registered as a current member, you are a current member, but the re-registration as a current member did not work;
.
etc.
.
Press 0 if you are a current member, have re-registered as a current member, the re-registration as a current member worked, and you have lost the will to live.

Hi thanks for this but this is exactly my point - this gets translated to "https://www-946.ibm.com/support/servicerequest/Home.action" - and as I haven't commited the URL to memory I bookmark it, then IBM move off 946 or whatever it is to another hard-coded value!

IBM is well-known for contriving long and laborious URLs.

A google search for 'ibm+esr' got it as the first hit. A similar search of IBMs website for 'esr' found the exact same link.

You would think that www.ibm.com/esr should work, too; but results in 'Our apologies… The page you requested cannot be displayed.

Not great I agree. If I bookmark an IBM page, I have got into the habit of immediately going to my bookmarks and re-editing the URL to remove the unwanted bit from the address. I figured that redirection (if needed) from the more generic address would always be supported in the future.

Yep, me too. If the url is http://www-nnn.ibm.com/, it should usually be supportable at http://www.ibm.com/
