To all:
We have recently experienced a case where a message larger than the maximum message size was placed in a queue. We currently have the setting at its default, 4194304. The message is close to that size, 4452 kb. My thought was that the message should have never made it into the queue in the first place, but it DID get in there, it did get sent up to its destination queue, but was unable to be processed by the receiving application due to a 2010 error (MQRC_DATA_LENGTH_ERROR).
The only explanation I can think of for this behavior is if there is an extra "buffer" that MQ allows for messages, my guess would be to add Header information... I phrased my theory like this to my teammate:
"I'm thinking that at 4194304, that's enough for the message plus the header to process... let's just say that with the header, the message becomes 4500... with the message being 4452, technically it can fit, and it does, but when you add the header, it goes over that 4500.... "
Can anyone verify this, or offer an explaination? We're using MQ V 6.0.2.1 at the source, and V7 at the destination. Windows machines.

IMHO MAXMSGL incluses all headers (thats also explicit in the documentation for queues).
Its not written explizit for channels, but as the headers are transmitted too there should not be some "additional, reserved space".
where is your maxmsgl set? on the queue? on the channel? on both? are you sure it has not been reduced after the message has been send? can you reproduce it with the currend, verified settings of 4194304 on all involved channels and on all queues?

The current settings are the default across the board, in this case. Channel, queue, and queue manager, all at 4MB.
We have been able to replicate the behavior using the SAME messages that were originally used.
In a couple of weeks, we will be increasing these settings throughout our environment, but we're stumped as to figure out how this happened at all. From everything I see and have experienced in the past, this message should have never made it into the MQ environment at all.

Who or what put it into the queue? How do you think the msg was put to the queue? Or did it ... just appear, as if magic?
