Have you stopped the listener and tried it? Perhaps you should read the manuals for an explanation of exactly what a listener is, and what it does.

you'd have to be on the same box and have a bindings connection....

Haven't tried it lately. But if that doesn't work the answer is no as any client connection will need at least one qmgr listener to be up on the relevant qmgr.
Note that the OP did not specify anything about the qmgr status. It is implied here that the qmgr is running and accessible via runmqsc (meaning an application (mo71, WMQ ...) should be able to use a bindings connection), that the user has sufficient privileges etc... If the qmgr is stopped it is impossible...

I think I tried to clear some system queue msgs after I bring down the listener and keep the mstr live.

No error, it went through.
The msgs in the SYSTEM.CLUSTER.** (I forgot the name, maybe xmit.queue) were cleared.
here is what happened:
one of the pageset (persistent msgs inside) was full and the system was not able to pick up any more cluster command. I checked and noticed that one of the system cluster queue contained a lot of msgs. I tried to clear the msgs however it showed to me "queue in use". I tried to stop the cluster chls however I still was not able to clear the queue.
Finally I stopped the chin and was able to clear the msgs, I believe it is because that there were no more chls using the queue due to CHIN was down. |

All of this activity was due to a full pageset? A simple(r) and more direct solution would be to expand the pageset.

Assuming there was room on the physical disk.
I wonder what damage tanght did. Deleted application messages from the cluster transmit queue, causing loss of business data? Or cluster admin messages from the cluster transmit queue / cluster command queue? Or internal repository messages from the cluster repository queues? Sure hope it was a lab environment.

It was a testing machines, and the msgs were only testing msgs. it was not not passed to front-end cluster qmgr due to the server not up.
the point is: when you stop the chin, you can still work with your queues. |
